VISTA or MSN DL problems

My friend bought an eMachine about a month ago, 160G HD, preloaded with
Vista Home, upgraded to 1 Gig RAM. He uses dial-up MSN ISP account. MSN
was supposed to send him a setup disk (which he's still waiting for,
almost 4 weeks later) so I DL'ed the installation info from their
website on my PC and burned it to a disk for him. We dialed into his
ISP and started the installation file. THREE and a half HOURS later, it
was only about 3/4ths complete, and the server disconnected him. The ISP
indicated the DL would only take 27 minutes. So, he's still waiting to
get hooked up, even now, as it seems no matter what he tries the DL will
not fully complete.

Is the problem with VISTA, or is it with MSN's ISP? Are there some
switches within VISTA that's causing the problem or is the MSN ISP so
overloaded with traffic that he's timing out while DL'ing? Would
appreciate any (gentle) guidance advice that might help.

Does he have his firewall and antivirus and any other security disabled
during this installation?

Yes. McAfee came preloaded and keeps asking for registration and update
but it's not turned on.

Have you made sure Windows Firewall and the Windows AV program, I think
called Defender are turned off as well?

If yes, I'd advise calling MSN tech support for help getting it installed on
Vista.

Michael that stupid Defender is an anti-spyware program, not AV. but, it does
try to run things too!

Indeed, you are correct, Mick and I should have known as well since I was,
albeit briefly, in the beta for Defender. The application irritated me so
much, I left!<LOL>

Try Downloading MSN 9.5 From The Built In Administrator Account (Which You
Can Unlock By Going Into Local Security Policy, From Administrative Options,
On The Start Menu, In Either Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, Or Windows
Vista Ultimate Edition).
