Can one still obtain Vista coupons with new XP boxes?

Greetins all,

I have a friend that wants to buy a new computer.
He is concerned that a particular software package he must run is
incompatible with Vista.
So, he does not want to get a new computer with Vista.

But I have told him that, the best thing to do, in his case would be:
Get a new computer with XP, and a coupon for Vista upgrade. Then, send in
the coupon and "sit" on the new Vista upgrade for a while.
"Wait until you are sure you can run all of your necessary software", I tell
him, "and then urgrade your system and activate Vista".
Can anyone say for sure if this is really feasible nowadays? Are coupons
still being offered?
And is there any downside to "sitting on it"?

Thanks,

-Stan

Your friend could use the Vista upgrade advisor now to determine if the
software would run..

Hi Stan,

Many manufacturers are ending their free upgrade period. For instance, HP
did on 3/15, and others are following suit. If XP does everything your
friend needs, then pick up a system with it on it, or have one built by a
custom shop (most small shops will be more than happy to do this for you)
with a builder's license. If, down the road, he wants to upgrade he can
always pick up an upgrade version then. He may find that he doesn't need it
at all. He also needs to check with the software vendor on questions about
compatibility of the software, as they may not support an OS upgrade,
require an upgrade to the software, or have patches/workarounds in place.

I suspect that is an MS date. Well it applied to an Asus laptop that I
recently bought in the UK just before this date. I think the upgrade had to
be applied for before end March. You need to send a copy of the invoice when
applying for the upgrade.
