Will Vista Home Premium run acceptably with an Athlon 2200+ with 1.5 to 2
gigs RAM? If not, is there a socket A config that would run Vista ok?

Thanks.

Stick with XP. It's really not worth it.

It depends on what you're going to use the system for. Overall, I'd say it
will be fine. I've got a Sempron 64 2800+ (Socket 754) that's just a little
faster than my old Athlon XP 1800+ & 2400+, and Vista runs smoothly on it.
I have 1.5GB of RAM. Of course, Vista is more CPU-intensive, and I'll
guarantee you it will run a little slower than the same system will on XP,
but I don't feel it should run a lot slower. My system is slower on Vista
than it is on XP, but it's not drastically slower. I would be more
concerned with what video card you may have in that system. What video card
do you have?

Thanks. I've run the Vista compatibility programs from Microsoft, nVidia
and ATI. In general, they say I'm fine although nVidia suggests a faster
processor on the "recommended" tab. I have an ATI 9700 Pro so that should
be fine.

What I really wonder about are the mobo chipset drivers. I have an Epox VIA
KT266A mobo and an Epox nVidia nForce2. I know for a fact that nVidia will
not release Vista drivers for this chipset and I doubt that VIA will either
for this old chipset.

Don't worry about the chipsets. As far as I know, it's the CPU, HD, RAM,
and video card that I'd worry about, and from what you've given me, it will
be fine. A KT133 will run Vista, so a 266 should.

I probably will for the short term but eventually MS won't support XP.

Then switch to Ubuntu.

yes, a kt133 will run vista, i'm running with it right now

athlon xp 1700+
dfi ak75c
896 mb ram (had 1 gb but one chip got toasted)
all bells and whistles (aero automatically enabled, etcetera)

despite slow memory for today standards: yes, it is slower than xp in this
hardware, but i'm pretty surprised about the speed as vista is running
pretty well while the rc1 were pretty slow in this very same machine, as you
have a faster chip and memory, your installation should run smoother

my advice is just try it, and oh well, if you don't have problems with the
motherboard, don't "update" their drivers with the 4in1 (which can be
installed in vista btw)
