Vista on CD?

J

Jamo

Where I work, we have what management calls a "site" license for Microsoft
products. We get new software as it is released from Microsoft, but we are
a little slow to actually recieve the disks. So, this is my question.
We recently recieved Vista Business and it came on 4 cd's. Everything I had
read before said that Vista would only be available on DVD, so I was
surprised to see this. Another funny thing is, we also received Office
Enterprise 2007 and it came on DVD.
The cd's and dvd say volume licensing so maybe we have "volume" license
instead of "site" license, but I think you get when I mean.
Anyway, the 4 cd's for Vista seemed a little strange and I'm just wondering
if I'm missing something.
Have a great weekend!

Nope,

They have it out on cd's for MSDN and Technet scripts-so it is a legit gig

Have fun installin!

To the best of my knowledge, no such thing exists as a "site license". I
work for one of the largest corporations in the world and we sure don't have
a site license; software licensing and installations are very closely
monitored.

What it sounds like you have is an Open Volume license which includes a
media kit for all Microsoft software but not licenses to install any of that
software.

I worked for a company once that, before I started there, had been audited
and fined $300,000 for installing software at will from their media kits.
The fine was 3 times the cost of each and every unlicensed installation.

The people here are really uptight about all software being legit, so I'm
sure that's not a problem. Of course,
with the Vista activation which is required of all versions, I'm sure I
would find out pretty soon if there was a problem.
What I was going to get around to, was asking if anyone knew a way of
transfering the 4 cd's to a DVD and also
if Vista has an answer file for unattended installs.
Thanks again....have a good one!

It sounds like your company is participating in "Microsoft Volume License
Services". I've never heard of anything that just opens you up to all MS
product. Someone at your company had to physically purchases MVLS for
Vista. When they did that they specified CD as their media of choice. You
can buy additional media for close to nothing and get the actual DVD. There
are a few media types to choose from:

Windows Vista Business 32-bit English Disk Kit MVL CD UPG
Windows Vista Business 32-bit English Disk Kit MVL DVD
Windows Vista Business 32-bit English Disk Kit MVL DVD UPG
Windows Vista Business 32-bit English Disk Kit MVL MVLS Only ISO CD
Windows Vista Business 64-bit English Disk Kit MVL DVD

I find it odd that Vista "could" come on CDs yet Office comes on a DVD yet
can fit on a CD. I know the reasons for putting Vista on CD so why wasn't
the same option for Office made available? Someone at MS is a little
squirrelly!

What does MSDN/Technet subscribtion have to do with production environment?

I have an MSDN subscription and that has nothing to do MS sending me ALL
software on disc nor does it have anything to do with using the available
software for production use.

MSDN library includes a "team" license. It does not include site license to
use any software. I know TechNet used to have a server license option where
you could install the library on a server and share within your
organization. I know both MSDN and TechNet do NOT have any license that
allows operating system or other software to be utilized by other than the
named subscriber.

That is NOT right for Vista Business. Jamo is referring to Vista Business.

What version of Vista is that listing referring to? You'll note the files I
listed are for BUSINESS. Your listing tell us nothing.

Make sure your info comes from licensing.microsoft.com with regards to Vista
Business.

Hello,
So that is the client release package for Retail or MSDN that contains all
the client skus, not just the Business skus so it's not surprising that
there are more cds in that packaging.,
Thanks,

The MSDN set of 5 cd's is not edition specific any more than the dvd is.
Product keys are available for Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and
Ultimate. The pk determines the edition installed using the 5 cd's.

J

Justin

What part of BUSINESS are you people not understanding?

You can NOT install Vista Business or Enterprise with that set of 5 CDs.

Business and Enterprise are 100% different.

Please do not post information unless you know what you are talking about.
It only confuses people.

VISTA BUSINESS IS ONLY 4 CDS!

Jamo, don't listen to these people. Your set of CDs is correct.
