Vista not compatible with Satellite Broadband

Guest

We upgraded our computer to a new acer1000 with windows vista installed.

Get it set up, and find that vista is not compatible with Telstra bigpond
satellite broadband, we have a 2way Direcway4000 modem. Rang telstra, told to
go back to XP or buy new modem for $900 !!! I don't think so.

My question is: If or when will Microsoft make Vista compatible with my
satellite connection? or Is this a Telstra problem?

Any help from others in same situation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Telstra needs to resolve your problem.
Call back and talk to Telstra support and see if you get the same answer as
the last time.

It's not that Vista is not compatible with satellite broadband. You even
answered your own question.

This Direcway 4000 of yours appears to be a USB device, and it seems that
Telstra are saying that this modem has no Vista drivers. Vista is
incompatible with your supplied modem.

They pay for the modems with your subscription fees, so replacing them with
a model that has Vista drivers to anybody that just wants to use Vista is
unlikely to fit with their business plan. If a new one costs $900, you can
understand their reluctance to replace the one that they have already given
you.

You could use your old computer, connected to a router and connect through
that. You will of course, have to keep your old computer on, in order to
use your new one.

$900 for a modem is complete highway robbery.

Does your "modem" not talk ethernet? And THAT costs $900? If it talks
ethernet, just plug in a $50 router or even a hub and plug your computer
into that. You will probably get better performance long term in any
regard.

If it does not talk ethernet, get a router anyway, and use your XP
computer as a bridge I guess. But this seems like Telstra is ripping
you off. I would complain louder.

(FYI, I also have a satellite connection. My modem does talk ethernet,
so I connect through a router. There are problems when I need to
connect a vista computer directly to the modem for diagnostics, so I
keep an XP machine around for that purpose.)

Look at the specs. It does not seem to have an ethernet interface:

Thankyou for the reply, synapse.

1. The dw4000 is definately a usb only device.
2. Our old computer with XP on it is stuffed.
3. Telstra made a profit of about 3.2 Billion dollars last year, they can
afford to give me a new modem, which no doubt costs them a lot less than $900.
4. Our home phone, internet and 2 mobiles are all with Telstra (customer
loyalty worth anything?)

When you said "Telstra are saying that this modem has no Vista drivers.
Vista is
incompatible with your supplied modem."

Does that mean a driver for this modem doesn't exist or never will exist???

Thanks Chesterboy.

it exist but not for vista at the moment, but i'm sure if microsoft wakes up
or the amker of your device wake up, then a vista driver will appear

What sort of modem do you have ? and who is your satellite connection

Thanks Chesterboy.

Drivers are the responsibility of the hardware manufacturer and not
Microsoft.
The drivers distributed by Microsoft are provided by the hardware
manufacturer.
So if a driver is to be developed for the modem, it will need to come from
the manufacturer.

My satellite connection is through "Wildblue".

It hasn't always been a smooth ride....

I am not sure who manufactures the modem, but it comes from Wildblue as
part of the installation setup process.

Good luck.

I do not think it would be in any way cost effective to have a satellite
antenna on a moving car for a broadband internet connection. The
satellites are in geo-stationary orbit, so the satellite dish needs to
be aimed at them. This is important for both upstream and downstream
traffic.

I may be wrong, but based on my experience, this seems improbable,
unless there is some tracking device that can be built into a moving
dish, which seems like it would be expensive and finnicky.
