Vista & MS Outlook Express 6

W

Wings

I just got a new HP laptop computer with Vista already loaded.
I use MS Outlook Express 6 on my home computer but cannot seem to get it on Vista computer.
How can I get MS Outlook Express 6 on new HP Vista laptop? When & if I can accomplish that, then how do I import contacts, newsgroups etc. to new Vista laptop computer?
I'm ready to return it and find one without Vista loaded.
Please advise.
Thanks

Instead of Outlook express. Vista using it's replacement called windows Mail, which is about 90% like OE. Works pretty much the same, and you can point and import contacts and old files pretty much like you did under OE6

Outlook Express can not be used in Vista. Windows Mail is the OE
replacement - sort of.

Windows Mail has replaced OE in Vista. It can import from OE's message
store if you copy it from the old computer to the new one.

Windows Mail is already there--and it is Outlook Express's replacement.

how do I import contacts, newsgroups etc. to new Vista laptop computer?

You can use Windows "Easy" Transfer, but it will not transfer messages (I'm
not sure I got it to do anything constructive--what a joke IMO). You can
copy OE's files and import them into Windows Mail. Even that process is
potentially flawed (see other posts here for how to work around it the
double folder name issue).

I'm ready to return it and find one without Vista loaded.

If OE is your only concern you should be able to get through it OK; though
not as easily as you should be able to, IMO (I think Easy Transfer should
bring in messages too).

Outlook Express works in XP, but not Vista
Here is a link to importing OE's message store to WinMail in Vista:.
http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#OE2WM
The alternative to transitioning to WinMail, besides dual booting or virtualization,
is sticking with XP. With Business and Ultimate you get downgrade rights, but
exchanging for a computer with XP instead of Vista might be less complicated.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all!!
It seems a bit confusing to point and import contacts and old files from one to the other.
I best wait until hubby gets home! Hopefully he'll know how to do it.
Enjoy Life!

Windows Mail has replaced OE in Vista. It can import from OE's message
store if you copy it from the old computer to the new one.

While that is entirely true Alias, There is one detail you are missing -
Windows mail sucks! I tried it in the beta I was running (5308). I
finally received my free Vista and Office licenses yesterday, and I
loaded Vista last night. I cleaned off one of my 110gb drives and
partitioned 30gb for Solaris, 30gb for Ubuntu (I decided to throw it
into the mix and try it out too, thanks in part to you), and the rest 50
some odd gb for Vista and Office 2007. So I did get vista loaded and
dual booting now with XP, but I have yet to get networking going on in
vista. I'll let you know how it is once I get it setup in RTM. I hope
it has improved significantly, but I'm not holding my breath! :)

So, your opinion is based not only on a beta version of Vista, but an OLD
beta version of Vista.

Are we then to assume that ALL your past comments regarding Vista are also
based on an old beta version(s)?

That puts a lot into perspective.

I'll take the liberty of correcting you:

Well, like I said, I hope that is the case. I really hope it has
improved, but they didn't do anymore features after 5308, just bug fixes
as I recall, so it probably does suck just as much, just with less bugs.
But then again, dunno really till I try it.

NG readers. Who else? All the people that have read your opinions in
regards to Vista.

Yes, many bug fixes.

Have they made the back up simpler than OE?

In what regard? Windows XP doesn't backup OE whereas Vista does backup WM.
In addition, just like OE you can backup the entire store folder.

And, if one reinstalls, one can use the backed up store folder by
copying it and pasting it over the new store folder? Or does one have to
import and restore registry files like with OE? With T-Bird, all one has
to copy is the Profile and all accounts, messages, rules, etc. are
restored when pasted over the new Profile.

If you backup with Windows backup then you are covered. Or use third party:

There are a couple registry keys that need to be backed up however at least
the account settings are now stored in the mail store. There is nothing
"cryptic" about what's left in the registry. Just things like rules and so
forth. Mostly default settings that do not need to be backed up in the
first place.

It has yet to transfer anything of use for me. I should note I'm *not*
interested in it creating the user account, and the plethora of settings and
whatnot that it seems to initially want to do. Every time I've tried it,
even though the new PC has the same user account and password as the old one
it does virtually nothing.

I need the following to be backed up:

Signatures
Accounts
Messages
Message Rules
Address book

And, with T-Bird, it's a quick copy/paste of the profile. In OE, it's
more complicated. Has Windows Mail made it easier or does one have to
import messages, merge the sigs, rules and accounts and import the
address book like you need to do with OE?

I already answered your question. Use Windows Backup or third party. The
link I gave you is a very small, simple and easy to use app. Or you can
just copy the mail store, it includes Email, Contacts and Account Settings.
I do not know where the signature settings are kept and it does not include
mail rules. However the two mentioned apps take care of that.

That link leads to a $40 program. What other app are you talking about
and is it free?

If you copy the message store from Windows Mail, what do you do with it
on the new computer, just paste it over the message store in the new
computer?

With T-Bird, you copy the Profile and paste it on the other computer and
you're done. Bye bye OE and no Windows Mail for me.
