I have Office 2000 on my soon to gone computer. Will Vista accept an Office
2000 install? I have my CDs with the required keys and all the downloaded
updates etc. If not, would the latest version of Office be able to open the
2000 Excel and Word documents?

Yes, it will work. BUT, there are some minor quirks that some people are
having. Nothing major, though. It should work fine for you.

Dual booting here -Windows XP and Windows Vista. Installed Office
2000 Professional into Vista the other night and set up shared data
partition. Installed fairly easily. You will find that Outlook 2000
does not work as there is a problem with the Address Book. I have
not heard of any insurmountable problems with Excel or Word. With
Excel you will need to look at UAC ( User Access Control ) settings
as files created elsewhere become read only. I have turned off
UAC, which solves the problem but leaves a permanent Windows
Security alert in the Notification Area ( not sure yet how best to
fix that ). Also if you are using macros you will need to change the
settings in Tools, Macro, Security from High to Medium.

I use Excel a lot and access files using Windows Explorer. In
essence I access to update or use an existing file as a template for
a new file. If you are using this method rather than accessing
through Excel ( or Word ) to create new files or access existing
files you may find the new version of Windows Explorer less than
helpful. Presently I am trying to figure out whether there are
acceptable workarounds or a standalone file manager is needed.

IF you are considering purchasing Office 2007, I must say it is a great
improvement over Office XP and Office 2003, both of which I used

Thanks for your (and others) response(s).
Ques. If Excel files become read only, as you point out, can a workaround
be just to open the file, copy the data and then paste into a new
worksheet.? ----Or is this just to simple? I currently use windows explorer
a lot to access a variety of files--Based on your comment is the Vista
explorer so non-friendly that this is going to becaome a big pain?

In some quarters turning off UAC is seen as an unwise way to go but
others (including some MVP's) say turn it off. The problem is that
the new Vista user needs to gains permissions ( be allowed to make
changes etc to the file). So far I have only discovered how to
tackle this task on a file by file basis. If you have a lot of files
giving the Vista user control could be a tiresome task but I suspect
that is what I may eventually do.

The way you implement the change is not the problem. It is the need
to do it many times. If you do it on an as needed basis you have to
turn off UAC and reboot for the change to take effect. The same
applies when you turn UAC back on. Of course this is only a change
over problem, although the problem may arise when you swap files
with another user.

Too early to say on what I will finally feel about Windows Explorer
in Vista. So far I am encountering the negatives and have not
noticed too many helpful changes. Simple things like how to access
the Advance Search function are not easy to find and how do you Stop
the search is another irritant. I may feel differently when I know
my way around the new layout.

Can you search for files based on their content - if so how?

OpenOffice.org, for free will certainly do that.

Except that OpenOffice has limited capabilities compared with MS Office.
But, you can download OpenOffice, check it out and uninstall it if it
isn't for you.
