The lack of control of my own computer is what has driven me to that OS
starting with the letter L. Yesterday I attempted to update my legally
purchased copy of Windows. I selected the option that would allow me to
choose the security downloads. To my surprise the FIRST download (no choice)
was Windows Genuine Advantage. There was no getting around it. Needless to
say it p*ssed me off and the security update did NOT occur. Lack of choice.

What did Ido after that...I rebooted into the Linux side of the
computer--where I have complete control over what is one my computer. If not
for the few games that I still run, I'd wipe the partition clean.

Microsoft, as a customer who has purchased (over the years) no less than 6
copies of Windows, I am completely annoyed.

Would you kindly drop me an email if you're still reading here?

Best to put the same name used here in the subject (Spam filter etc)

(e-mail address removed) will do for the email :)

I'm with you here. You can either download and install all of the
updates for windows manually, or you can use the website below. I
believe it lets you download MS critical security updates without WGA.

I Know Just How Much Red Tape You Need To Cut When Dealing With Them
(First I Needed To Pass A Drug Test, Then I Needed To Pass A State Of

Check, Finally Right Before Employment, I Needed To Pass An FBI Finger
Print Back Ground Check), Just FYI.

Likewise with me.

However ... that manual Windows-update WGA is not the WGA-Notification. The
latter is the bad one. The former "merely" checks if your copy is genuine.
(yeah somewhat tongue in cheek) And yes, 5 to 10% are false positives.
That's "merely" millions of computers. 'Course, with tens and maybe
hundreds of millions of invalid copies of Windows out there, what's a
money-hungry company to do?

Bottom line, I think it worth the risk to accept the d* WGA, just for the
added control it gives me for selecting not only the critical, but also the
optional, downloads. ymmv.
