I can't receive mail if I select "Send/Receive", I get a blank error message
that reads "Some errors occurred while processing ... yatta yatta" but there
are no errors listed. If I select TOOLS/Send and Receive/Send All -or-
Receive All -or- my POP name, then it works.
Also my ebay email, as an example, does not display the pictures like it
isn't linked to the internet. I just restored the original image for my
laptop due to other problems so the defaults are in control.

That type of symptom is usually caused by interference from an
antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus should be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:
