That doesn't look like a Windows Mail error message. Which mail
client program are you running? If Windows Live Mail, you will get
more help by posting that issue in the WLM newsgroup:

via your news reader: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

The client program is Windows Mail that comes with Vista.
The error occurs whenever I try to connect to the server (IMAP), getting
mail, updating the folders list etc.

Your issue is probably related to how Dovecot is configured on your Linux box.
I don't see any obviously wrong settings, but then I know nothing about Dovecot.
If you want to test your Windows Mail with a standard IMAP account you can
set up a Gmail IMAP account on it:

Forget Vista mail, it only seems to work with Micro$oft servers.
Anything else it is most likely to not work well if at all.

It caused me to switch to Thunderbird. And haven't looked back. I have
mail accounts all over the place and want one mail/news client and
Thunderbird does it well. Vista mail and Live junk failed miserably.
