Not much information on which to guess the answer.
We need a lot more details such as when, what error messages, what hardware, what software do you
have , etc.
Also lay off the enter key at the end of your message. You don't need twenty blank lines.

When Vista appears to bog down. hit ctrl-alt-delete, at the screen to which
it takes you choose "Start Task Manager," and look in processes for anything
other than System Idle Process for which you see high CPU numbers. If you
can determine nothing from that, check the Event viewer under Administrative
Tools as it might show some consistent error that would indicate an issue.
Double click the error, the information contained within might lead to the
source of the problem.

If you are hearing a lot of disk thrashing when the system seems bogged
down, it may simply be a case of indexing. This happens a lot early on as
you use Vista but it happens much less as time goes on. If you have items
scheduled to run in the background, a virus scan or other such activities,
they can also cause the system to seem to bog down.

it could be the peanut butter sandwich your kid popped in the dvd drive to
use as a speedbooster?

I had the same problem, hanging up. i also have the problem with computer
not going to sleep when i want it to. Dell on call said he had the same
problem with his personel computer. he was running google earth and so was
I. We um installed google earth and the computer went to sleep like it
should ( just one time) them back again, no sleep. I also had other google
stuff. I unstalled everything from google, since them everything is just
fine. Just my 2 cents worth.

I am having similar problems with MSN or Windows Live as it now seems to be,
It takes ages to change screens and I keep getting the screen greyed out all
over with "not responding" in the bar at the top of the page. Is it a
Windows Live problem? Most other websites are responding quickly. I have the
latest Live update and all of the Vista updates.

Hey Rosie,

I get this problem all the time, unfortunately it's something I fear we're
all going to have to put up with until Microsoft release a service pack.

My system 'locks up' on a regular basis and there is no reason for it other
than Vista is sub-standard and is pretty much still like a 'beta' / 'testing'
version of windows.

The main lock-up's I have are programs 'Not Responding' or 'Stopped
Working', my system is brand-new and top spec and I rarely had these problems
in XP, if you have an XP installation disc and are confident you can install
XP by yourself then I would recommend removing Vista and putting XP back on
your system.

Alternatively if you have an external hard disc you could put XP on that and
boot from it, assuming your BIOS supports that function.

I now have an external hard drive that I boot XP from and when I'm using XP
on the same machine it works so smoothly, without any problems, XP is for me
still a pleasure to use (and vista is a chore).

And for those people who are curious about my spec, as follows: Intel Dual
Core 64bit 2.4GHz processor(s), 6GB RAM, 1.5TB hard disc storage, ATI Radeon
2600XT 1GB version (and yes with this high spec I still get lock-ups all the
time!)
