Vista - Limited Internet Access

I have a new emachine AMD +4400 computer running OEM installed Vista Home
Preminum.

I have verified through my IP and emachine that my connection is working and
can connect to the internet but only with google as the default home page but
can't transfer to any selected links from the search.

I can type a known good websites in the address bar, ie www.msn.com or
www.aol.com, but internet explorer will time out and not connect. Windows
Updates will also time out.

I did unistall the 60-day evaluation copy of Windows Office student version
and the 90-day McAfee evaluation software per the emachine technician but
this was not a solution.

Any ideas on fixing the above?

FWIW: I don't have the Vista disks for the OS because it is OEM but is there
a version of Internet Explorer I should download to try and reinstall or
should I go to an alternative browser?

Thanks

There is a copy of IE without add-ons in Start - All Programs - Accessories

See if that works. Close this IE.

Uninstall McAfee - REBOOT

Check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc for HOSTS

(it has no extension). You can edit it with Notepad or Wordpad. If' it
has more than the instructions. Rename HOSTS.old.

Start the REGULAR IE.

IE - TOOLS - Internet Options - Security Tab - RESTRICTED SITES - Delete
all in there. CLICK RESET ALL ZONE to DEFAULT LEVEL. Close IE
and restart it and see if all is ok.

Thank You Spirit - I will try the non-add-in version tonight (Home PC) and
send results of the test.

Appreciate the response.
