Vista last Tuesday Updates, an install disaster.

Juan I. Cahis

Dear friends:

Vista last Tuesday Updates, were an install disaster.

If I go to Windows Update, it says that I haven't any update to
install, but if I go to the Installed Update Page, it says that all
the installations of the last Tuesday failed to install.

What can I do to reinstall them?

I have Vista Business 32 bits.

How and where? Will this happen every second Tuesdday of the month?
How to correct the problem?

Note the KB article number for the failed updates. Go to the MS KB site,
search on that article, locate the link for the downloadable file, download
it, and run it manually.

No one can possibly answer whether the problem will continue. Why did it
fail?- I don't know. I had no problems, but then I manually install most
updates.

I use windows update in Vista to indicate what updates are available, read
about each one to see if I need/want it on a particular system, download
manually those that I want, and install each one manually, rebooting if
needed. For things like Defender updates, or the phishing filter updates I
just let windows update install them Are there any error codes?

You can also check the postings in and if needed post to the windows update
newsgroup.

My younger brother just had this problem. He downloaded the updates. There
was a window telling him to reboot to finish the installation. He said no.
Then about 1/2 hour later he ran CCleaner to clean out his computer (I have
told him repeatedly to NOT do this except after he first boots his
computer).

He then rebooted. Now he has the same condition as you do. He broke the
installs.

If you wait for a day or so they will be offered again. Remember to reboot
when you are instructed to so so.

Dear Rock, thank you for your reply.

I posted the problem I had with the automatic update a couple of days
ago, without receiving any hint about. Do you know what WCP.DLL does?

Here is what I said then:

Vista's Microsoft Windows Update crashes. Today, my Vista Business
computer started to download and install all the yesterday supplied
patches from Microsoft, and it crashed every time that it tried to
install any of the just supplied security patches. After the installer
crash, I didn't need to reboot to continue working with the PC, but I
needed to reboot to continue with the patches download/install
process.

I could take note of the following information related to the crashes:

APPCRASH
Application: TrustedInstaller.exe
Module: WCP.DLL

Curiously, when I originally installed Vista on my PC, I updated it
going manually to the Ms Windows Update WEB page, without any problem.
But the automated process resulted a disaster. Could be a solution to
disable the automatic process, and to go manually to the Ms Windows
Update WEB page once every Friday, when the Microsoft server's load
should have declined?

I didn't have any problem, however, with my "old" WinXP PCs.

My Vista operating system tried to install these updates, KB929123, KB936825,
KB905866, KB933566, KB931213. It crashed my computer. There appears to be a
problem with these updates. The one good thing was that Vista automatically
will restore to prior the updates. I have now turned off the automatic
updates.

Sorry Juan I don't have any experience with that particular error.

The CCleaner people broke WMP before, and I let them know and they fixed it
up -- do you want to ask him to fix this or should I? You would have much
more knowledge here than I would, since I haven't hit or emulated this
error. CCleaner should not touch files during a reboot state. If that is
indeed what it's doing, that's bad. =)

It is my brothers fault because he changed the default configuration of
CCleaner. By default, CCleaner cleans out temp files that are over 48 hours
old. This can be changed to clean all temp files. My brother had done this.
He is anal about cleaning his computer and will run CCleaner every hour and
defrag 3-4 times a day.

He is an old dog that can not learn new tricks. Other than cleaning his temp
folders and defragging the computer, he has learned nothing about computers
in 5 years of using Windows XP.

I will be contacting the maker of CCleaner to chat with him.
