vista jpeg issue

I have cds with jpeg files on them that open and work fine in XP, however my
laptop running vista shows these cds as blank regardless of the program used
to access them (Windows pic and fax viewer, paint, even Exporer)? I know
these cds have items on them as I can remove them from the laptop drive and
access the jpegs on a pc running XP? Does anyone have a sugestion? I have
seen a thread reagarding a similar issue with Media centerbut would prefer
not to edit y registry. Also - I can access jpegs files on my vista laptop
from other sources...e.g the internet, usb drive etc.

It sounds like you created the CDs on CD-RWs with a packet-writing
program (Nero InCD, Roxio Drag&Drop or whatever it's called now) and
didn't close the session. The problem with packet-writing programs and
CD-RWs is that if you don't have the same program (or a UDF reader)
installed, the full disks will show as blank. See this link (which is

The workaround is to either install a free UDF reader (I believe Nero's
website has one and probably Roxio's does, too) or to go back and burn
the files onto a regular CD-R and close the session. This is exactly why
I don't recommend CD-RWs. CD-RWs come from the time when burning media
was extremely expensive so you wanted to have disks you could erase and
use over again. With CD-Rs now costing under a penny apiece, there is no
reason to ever use CD-RWs and very good reasons not to.
