Vista is not recognizing my Camera

Guest

I'm having trouble with my camera (Sony Cybershot DSC-W70) and Windows Vista.
What happens is that when I connect it through its USB cable, Vista tries to
look for a driver and can't find one, which is strange.

I recently formatted, and my old installation of Vista recognized the camera
perfectly, autoplay would popup when I connected the camera, and I could see
the camera on My Computer and access its files.

Any suggestions? I know my camera works and it's compatible with Vista, I
just don't know why is not working anymore (for the record, my other XP
machine recognizes the camera fine, so it's not the camera).

Where can I find this infcache.inf? I searched for it but couldn't find it. I
also noticed this problem is not isolated to my camera, a friend tried to
connect his USB Drive and it happened again, Vista tried to look for a driver
and failed, so it didn't show up on My Computer.

definatly sound like a corrypted infcache.inf file

open computer

go to c: drive

go to windows

go to inf folder

scroll down untill you reach "INFCACHE.1"

right click, select properties, then go to security tab, click on edit,
click continue when popup ask if you want to continue,

add your account name as full control of this file

click ok after all this is done, and click yes when system tell you that
it's a security risk.

click ok again

delete file

reboot

the devices should install correctly.

I am having a very similar problem, however the solution you gave for this
one did not fix it.

I have a Canon Powershot SD1000 and am running Vista premium (32 bit)
The camera previously connected to the computer just fine, however
spontaneously it no longer works.

What happens is, a window pops up on the taskbar trying to install the
driver software. The only thing it says is that it is searching the
preconfigured driver folders, then after a while it says the installation
fails.

It uses the vista PTP protocol so it does not have any of its own drivers. I
have searched everywhere to find support regarding the vista PTP drivers but
have found nothing that has helped. I know it is not the cable or the camera
because it connected instantly to a friends computer, installed the software
and worked fine.

Do you know of anything I can do?

same problem and symptoms with SD 1000 power shot; deleting inf* file from Windows Inf folder does not fix problem. MS and Canon each point to the other, with no help. Vista SP1 does not fix the problem. Help, please!

Same problem as what? You didn't quote any of the previous post to which you
are apparently referring so no one knows what you're talking about. You
probably think this is a "forum" and are accessing the newsgroup through
some sort of web interface. See the end of this post for an explanation of
Usenet and how to post.

Generally speaking, I don't recommend installing camera drivers/software on
Windows machines anyway. Many times they don't work or cause issues. Canon
software is particularly known to be bad. Use a USB card reader instead and
avoid the software issues entirely.

hi there. i am also having trouble with vista recognizing my camera.
it is a fujifilm funpix z20 fd. i won both the computer (which is a
laptop) and the camera in a contest and so, therefore, both are brand
new about 1 month ago. the camera came with software to install, which
i did, but it doesn't recognize the camera. windows comes up with the
message that it is "searching for drivers" but none are found. no
drivers are on the software disk either. we have tried everything.
unfortunately, my husband tried to "fix" it and made things worse so
that now i can't even get my email on my laptop, must use the desktop,
whereas yesterday i was able to receive my email on the laptop til
husband "restored" the computer to where it had been previously. i
think in so doing, he deleted something that i need to receive my email
(without backing it up, which i asked him repeatedly to do) and we don't
know what that "something" is to restore it.

i am near tears, this is so frustrating. not only the camera, but now
i can't even get my email. now it is just a big paperweight.

1. Have someone else set up your email and get the computer working
properly. Tell your husband you love him but don't let him work on your
computer again. ;-) The "someone else" can be a knowledgeable friend (if
you have one that is *really* knowledgeable and not just saying so) or a
computer professional. I don't suggest using a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad
type of place. Without being able to see the computer, I can't untangle the
mess but someone who knows what s/he is doing will very quickly get you
back in business.

2. Don't use the Fuji camera software. Use a USB card reader instead. Many
new laptops have a built-in card reader so you may not even need to buy
one. Look carefully at the laptop first! A USB card reader is extremely
inexpensive and you can buy one at Target-type stores, office supply
stores, etc.

hi malke, thank you for your response! i just had someone out here from
my ISP who was able to fix the email problem but couldn't fix the
problem with the camera. he, too, suggested the card reader. but, on
another note, my husband last night tried to plug in his usb thumb drive
and my computer wouldn't recognize it. so today the guy from my ISP
tried HIS thumb drive and HIS DIDN"T WORK EITHER! i don't know what to
do. microsoft CHARGES for support and i refuse to pay $59.00 for help
when my ISP people do it for free. ACER is no help either (it is under
warranty with them) because they say it is a software issue and that
microsoft has to take care of it! HELP!!

All your support comes from Acer and not Microsoft. Sorry, but that's the
way it works with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) machines. If you
are unhappy with this Acer (and I've never particularly liked Acer
laptops), return it to where you bought it and get something else.

Otherwise, back up your data and restore the machine to factory condition.
If the USB ports still don't work, take the machine back because this is a
hardware issue.

A clean install of Vista might be a good idea as well, since your husband
was tinkering. Also, I agree with Malke, the card reader is a good idea. I
just got one for 12 dollars at my local computer shop due to the same
problems regarding camera issues. I've had no problems since.
