vista is linux

Vista is linux with wine running on it.. there is no other explaination.

Vista has:

1) bad hardware support,
2) most apps dont run on it
3) you need to keep reading newsgroups just to get it to do what windows xp
does with ease.....

I thought we wanted to keep using windows because it was COMPATIBLE... lol

hey there is a big difference though...

for vista linux you have to PAY for this misery! And its not cheap either!

And I am now wondering... if vista is all this fuss,
why dont we all change to linux and get it over with..?

the companies will have to port their drivers and software to linux anyway..
just like they are doing with vista now...

So the user will benefit in the long run..

Vistanux or linvist... choose your flavor... it still stinks

Still more compatible with my software. I don't own any software that isn't
compatible. Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server complain, but I just
unchecked the box to notify me and I haven't had any problems.

I've don't need to read these groups, I do so because I want to help and I
find it enjoying (sometimes...).

My only hardware that isn't supported is my scanner that was made for
Windows 98. I haven't checked back lately to see if there are Vista drivers
yet, but even my Dell printer has drivers. Of course, I don't use nVidia
trash :) A similar check with Linux finds that a good bit of my hardware is
not supported.

I'm not opposed to open source, outside the fact that you are working for
free. I think I am a bit more ambitious than that.

You're right!

All these companies with these huge budgets are designing all their software
for Linux, too! And Vista's been out for a few months, so everything should
be compatible by now, just like Linux (yea, new kernels come out often, but
that's just the nature of the beast). Old hardware should be made for future
OS's built in. Or the OS should support 15 year old hardware. We don't want
to move up to better, as long as we offer support for old ass hardware!

Linux isn't bad, but you really have to play with it to get it running
smooth. Vista has its faults, but it is a MUCH easier OS for the average
person. I haven't run into many problems with it, and I'm running old
programs that probably shouldn't run on it. I've used Linux, and I love
Ubuntu. Ubuntu has some great hardware support, is easy to use, but when
stuff goes wrong, it's a lot harder than searching and asking in a
newsgroup.

Free is a misconseption.... that you will be poor and working
in a basment.

Its not how it has to be though....

Mozilla is making millions yet it is a free product. How?
Google is free.. its making millions...

In GNU freedom is more about the freedom for everyone to control the
evolution of a product, and not free as in free lunch.

J

jim kirk

er... it was a joke.....

Of course vista is not linux.. linux is a secure OS,
and has no problems with viruses and spyware :)

Linux vs. Windows is a never ending battle. Both have good and bad points.
And both are not made for the same type of user or same type of
applications. And the security, virus and spyware point can be argued for
centuries, as well.

I really like Vista. To me, it's a step in forward. I am looking forward to
the next version of Windows, as well. Vista needs a lot of changes to make
it perfect (if there is a sense of the word) for me, but its a lot better
than XP. We all have individual preferences, different computers, different
ways we use them... And Vista is what I like with my set of uses.

Linux is great. I use it to run Apache, MySQL, PHP, Tomcat, etc... Just as a
server. Windows can run the same, but I just want a simple and sweet server.
No GUI. It doesn't even need a monitor. It just can't play my games that I
so dearly love. And that is why Linux won't replace Windows on my desktop.

Windows and Linux are great. It's that damned MacOS that keeps trying to
butt in. Damn him! :) (I'm just joking for the serious Mac types!)

I send a donation to the authors of my distro (PCLINUXOS). They put in a
lot of hard work and help produce a useful operating system. They all
have daytime jobs. You can get the software free and use it freely,
without paying anything, but I would rather help out. The latest TR3 has
been rock steady, and I was able to install VMWARE, just by following the
directions in the Feb issue of PCLINUSOS mag. I dont think that Linux is
any harder than Windows, although I believe it is now easier than trying
to get Vista to work smoothly on your system. I hear some people
complain about the command line in a terminal, but most of the time that
I have used that, I was following very specific instructions and just
copying and pasting. I actually learned quite a bit in the process.
When you do something that affects the operating system in linux, you
have to enter a password, but that is far easier than the multiple choice
quiz that UAC puts you through.

What are you doing here. I've spent no time in Mac or Unix clone groups.
Because I use Windows.

UAC has no effect on me because I know how to turn it off. If you need help
with that please ask. Turn of UAC, logon as Standard User. You can enter
passwords till your hearts content

But of course if you use Linux you have to give up the right to use the OS
as you want, unlike MS's license.

If you want to talk about model rockets (and Governments are too stupid to
realise this is bomb making stuff) I'll listen. But to continiously harp on
about an OS MS rejected and dumped from the company, even though they once
wrote it and sold it, is stupid. It is also completely off topic.

Most older MS employees can use your terminal window without a manual. But
you don't seem to be able to work windows.

Remember, what I told you about sentences. You just cant put words
together randomly and expect anyone else to understand you. You might
want to try smaller sentences with a simple noun and verb.
For example:

Dick runs. Sally walks. Spot eats. Vista sucks.

Now, wasn't that easy. Anyone could understand the sentences.

I could believe that if:

1) vista did not bsod
2) it was immune to malware infestations.

BTW - I never have hardware support issues with Linux - I choose things
like Epson printers and scanners - well supported; Brother laser printer -
fully supported. NVidia and VIA video adapters - no problem; etc. I've yet
to find any needed Linux apps I can't run.

the plethora of apps for windows that are versitile (and many of them are
free) is overwhelming.

I would dare say that there are more freeware for windows than opensource
apps for linux...

ok there is a big difference between freeware and opensource I know

One is really free and one restricts what one can do with one's own
intellectual property.

I honestly find Windows to be a lot harder when stuff goes wrong.

For example, couple weeks ago my nVidia driver starts acting up occasionally
under XP. Exiting supreme commander would randomly lock up the
computer...couldn't switch between single / dual display anymore...

Now remember, I've been using that driver for many months without a single
problem. So what changed?

Who knows...I sure as hell don't...where would I start looking?

Turns out reinstalling the driver *appeared* to fix it, hopefully, maybe,
potentially...

Only thing you can really do when stuff breaks under windows is cross your
fingers, reinstall something and hope the bad things just...go away...

Duuhhh...how about looking at the log in event viewer.
That is if you can read.
