Vista. Is it better or worse than XP?

Jacob,

You will get dozens of responses, pro and con.

I, personally, have used Vista Ultimate on my new computer since March 31,
with no hickups. In looking back at the introduction of Windows XP
Professional, I performed a clean install of the retail version on my
computer. The only problem was the (premature, in my opinion) obsolescence
of an audio card.

Our Computer Club has several computers with Windows Vista Home Premium. No
problems. We successfully taught five new Vista classes to a packed house.

I am a volunteer and do House Calls for the club, 5 or six times a week. All
of our members are residents in a community of 55+ age restrictions. They
seem to take the changes in stride, not demanding instant gratification, but
willing to learn where to find functions that are changed or simply renamed.
None have yet asked how to go back to XP.

Some of the things that I specifically like are:
1. Scheduled background Defragmentation.
2. Rapid search (after the initial indexing of the 300GB of files that were
moved from the XP machine)
3. The Aero is pretty, but nothing more.
4. Scheduled Windows Backups to a USB hard drive runs flawlessly. I have
successfully recovered a file to see if it really works.

One person's opinion.

What are your opinions of Windows Vista?

My opinion and that of a lot of other consultants is that it is not yet
ready. We advise our clients to avoid vista.

Opinion:

Some think it better. Others think it worse.

I like it.

It works relatively well here as I've had near stellar performance from
Vista. I run software new and old and all my hardware runs with it. So
Windows Vista gets an A+.

The only mention is that one piece of hardware [older cheap Logitech Webcam]
requires a beta Logitech driver no longer available [although it does exist
and it does run the Webcam - that it is not available is Logitech's
decision]. But since I've abandoned that webcam for a much better SONY
camera it doesn't matter to me - though I thought I should mention it.

Other thoughts:

For a young family, Vista should be a no-brainer as the Parental Controls
are built in and easy to use.

The new Windows Explorer makes traversing the folder hierarchy very quick
and easy [which speeds up work for someone working with many files and
folders].

The new games are very nice and I like the Full System Backup utility.

Without getting into too much detail, the gist is that Vista is not ready
for primetime. There are too may programs and hardware that are not
compatible with Vista. I switched back to XP on my home system. I'll give
Vista another shot when SP1 comes out. If I could get all my programs and
hardware to work with Vista, I would use it, but that's a big "IF."

Vista has a better media centre than XP mce.
I have just tried Vista on my XP mce machine and have ordered the upgrade.

I am not upgrading my other XP laptop as I don't see enough of an advantage
to justify the cost although I would if it were cheap.

Vista is very frustrating. Most things are slower, copying large files,
working with development tools on Vista sometimes are a challenge. I think
Microsoft could have used another 6-12 months of development before
releasing Vista.

I have it on test machine, but most of my REAL work is still done with XP.
Whenever I want to play, I boot up Vista, then using it reminds me of how
nice XP is.

What ever you do, stay away from Ubuntu !

I Got Rid Of Vista And Installed Windows 2008 Public Beta Server On My
Computer. Then I Didn't Like It. I Removed Windows 2008 Public Beta Server
Then I Installed Ubuntu 7.10. Just FYI

You may get 100 different opinions.
Some people love it, some hate it, some put up with it.
I administer 200 systems with XP, 40 with Linux (originally Win 98, ME or
W2K), 2 with Vista; 1 with UNIX, and one AS-800.
Personally, I have used Vista since the first Beta release and nearly every
release since.
I don't see any reason at all to upgrade, but several reasons not to.
Not all hardware and software that worked in XP will work with Vista.

With Vista, MS rearranged the interface to make it 'more user friendly and
intutitve'.
Unless you've never used Windows before, the new arrangement will frustrate
the hell out of you.
The directory structure is different, file/folder names have been changed or
rearranged.
MS says it is more secure, I say, hackers will figure it out in no time and
it will just irritate users.
The MS Nanny (they call it User Access Control, aka UAC) will always
ask...are you sure, really, REALLY sure that you want to run this program
time after time. If you fire the Nanny (turn off UAC) other features break.
A very poor implementation of a somewhat good idea.
MS claims it is better security, I say it will just condition users to click
through as quickly as possible (to get the damn thing out of your way) so
you can get to work. I never had security issues with XP that weren't
handled by my AV or AS software. But I don't file share or do Porn...
They built enough DRM into Vista that many ripped or downloaded media files
won't work properly unless you use third party players.

I haven't had any of the problems I have seen others complain about; but I
built my machine just for Vista with all Vista compatible hardware.
Unless there is something that only Vista will do, I wouldn't spend the
money.
To me, Vista is just XP run through a blender, mixed with Epoxy and cured in
the toilet...

Getting bored of ubuntu yet?

See if you can use your influence for the version naming.

Try pushing for :

Harpooned Hamster

Incoherent Iguana

Juvenile Jackass

if they use one of these names....I'll install it.

almost no problems here at all, i had not the "slow file transfer problem"
ever
had bluescreens once a week until i find the culprit (was nod32) but since i
uninstalled it never ever appeared again
my pc is not quite powerful to run the extra services comfortably (i guess
the major bottleneck is my memory, which run at 133mhz), but its still quite
usable and i only feel the graphics slower when i resize (i should also say
that i have a pretty large desktop resolution and that MATTERS obviously)

what i like most, is a bit difficult to say...
-uac, at last working as limited user is doable and easy, and will force
users to know what permissions are at last (xp failed in that)
-search, obviously, it works fast in my pc, faster indeed than the ms
desktop search in xp... i wonder how fast it is in a new pc! o_O
-some internal changes involving prioritized memory pages, multimedia paths
and low priority input-output processes, among others
-aero, but not quite aero, desktop composition - or to know you will not see
redrawing anymore, among other nifty thingies it can be done with it
-small tweaks which seem to dont be biggies, but they do make difference,
such as headers always visible, grouping & stacking in explorer (very
powerful, well done!)
-threaded explorer, i no longer need to wait for the cd to be ready for
showing the contents of my hd
-photogallery, oh i love it, it is such a big help, it is now available for
xp also though
-updated cleartype, though it is not that big... until you see the same text
in xp side-by-side (not that xp cleartype were bad, it actually is
incredibly good, but now is even better)
-updated tablet pc features and energy administration, which i use in my
tablet pc :-p
-ie7 protected mode, its really good, stopped a infection even before the
antivirus knew what was happening
-the new sync center also holds its ground, though i do not use it that much

and dunno what more, i must say i like more internal changes than outer
ones, theres no way i will be going back to xp now

Kind of a shame we missed fanatical fanboy really, that would have
suited some on both sides, but inquiring minds want to know precisely
what it is you have against hamsters :)

I prefer it to XP, as it has lots of new features and better security. But
check that your hardware and software is fully compatible before upgrading
(I think this is the reason why many people have had problems using Vista).
With the right hardware and compatible software, it's very good.

Not all hardware and software that worked in XP will work with
Vista.

On the other hand Vista will install on a machine with USB k'board
and mouse which XP cannot (unless the BIOS has support for this -
but try it on a Dell Dimension 9150!).

Yes, and you can add things like SATA RAID drivers from USB sticks, CDs etc
during setup. No need for a floppy drive any more!

Well, bye then - best wishes to you on the Linux newsgroups.
