Vista is always beeping at me

Ever since I bought my new computer with Vista installed (and even after
reinstalling Vista once), whenever I click my mouse on certain list items,
the computer beeps the Default Beep sound.

It happens with all sorts of random programs (I can't figure any rhyme or
reason to why it happens with some and not with others). It doesn't happen
on my desktop, in Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer - or any MS Office
programs, that I can recall. It doesn't happen on the main GUI of any
program, just on lists, such as sub-forms, that are populated with a row of
items to select from - and if I have to double-click on an item to open it, I
get a double beep!

This has been going on for months and it just drives me crazy. What is
going on here? And how do I stop it (aside from unassigning the Default
Beep, which could be detrimental regarding the events that I SHOULD be
notified of).

Anyone?

I'd go with the 'apart from' clause. Important events don't tend to be
associated with a default beep sound.
