Vista installation

I have tried installing Vista business on a fresh machine about 6 times.
(Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different
result.) I seem to get through the initial part of the installation okay.
It starts windows for the first time to a blank screen. I've let it sit for
2 hours and see no activity. Repeat, repeat, repeat...

When I reboot I get the message that "The computer has restarted
unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot
proceed. To intall Windows, click "Okay" to restart the computer and then
restart the installation"

Should I have more than 2 hours of blank screen with no apparent DVD or HD
activity and just wait longer?

Asus P5N32 SLI Deluxe
P4 650 Prescott 3.4GHz
1GB RAM
GeForce 6600 PCI Express 256MB
180GB partition

I've tried safe mode but since installation hasn't completed...it doesn't
work.
I also enabled 640x480 mode during install with no impact.

Any suggestions?

Try connecting an different monitor (glass instead of LCD). This problem
seems to happen with some LCD monitors and the next-to-final phase of Setup.
