Vista Installation CD

Hello:

I purchased a new PC with pre-lodaded Vista Premium Home Edition.

Now, I would like to partition hard drive and have dual boot with Windows NT
2003 server on one partition and Vista on the other or alternatively XP and
Vista.

Question 1:
PC did not come with installation CDs allowing to install fresh copy. Am I
entitled to obtain install disks? Is so, where do I get it?

Question 2:
Would dual partition NT/Vista or XP/Vista would work?

Your assistance or re-direction would be appreciated.

No you are not entitled to installation CD's, your PC mfg likely included
the recover data on your hard drive. You may be able to call them and have
them shipped to you for free or a fee.

Yes a dual boot will work provided it's done correctly.

Hello David:

I contacted manufacturer and requested installation disks. Thanks

Just to clarify: did you contact your computer maker or MS? I ask
only because there is a related thread generating some heat ;o) in
this group even now.

Were you given any argument when you requested the disks, and did
you have to pay for them?

Thanks.

Read these articles. They contain a method for installing a prior o/s after Vista(the normal is to install the older o/s first and let Vista create the bootloader files).
http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=88231
- You need to download VistaBootPro for the above method to work

System Restore(Vista, XP) Missing in Dual Boot systems

Missing Partitions

Vista no longer starts after installing and earlier o/s
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919529

The Vista CD/DVD is not needed for setting up a dual boot system, though having it is a plus.
- Did you mean you do not have an XP or NT o/s cd ? If yes, you may be limited depending upon the type of cd provided, install location etc since it will be an OEM cd. Proceed with caution and from an informed position, you do not want to damage your Vista installation or in some cases negatively impact your OEM warranty.

To add to the other posts, you need to investigate whether XP drivers are
available for the new system you purchased. Some systems, such as laptops,
which are set up for Vista, do not have XP drivers available.

Hello:

I contacted manufacturer. I was offerred free recovery CD. I suppose
recovery CDs will allow me to instal dual boot: either XP/Vista or
NTServer2003/Vista. Also, Vista does not support CISCO VPN client (I was not
able to make it work) and I cannot connect to my work net drives.
I will call tomorrow customer suppport to see if those disks are really
free. I am not sure if they are the same as full installation disks. I am
not sure where can I get full installation disks - I don't think Microsoft is
providing them. If I want to re-format my hard drive, I am not sure if
recovery disks will put back the Vista......

Normally a recovery CD will restore the system to a predetermined state, it
restores an image that's on the CD, but it's not an installation CD so you
can't choose where to restore to, and it will wipe out everything on the
drive it restores to.

Hi:

Thanks for cautioning me to the problem with XP drivers for a new machine.
I would expect that XP would have drivers for any new machine or I can
downlodald them - I will get my Vista recovery disks from the manufacturers
today . I will check hardware compatibility with the machine for XP but if
there are drivers problems I will return this machine. On top of my
problems, CISCO does not provide VPN client for Vista and this prohibits me
from connecting to my work network drives. If I cannot make dual boot work
I may end up with waiting for Vista. I would like to get full Vista
installation but I don't think I should be paying if I already purchased OEM
version.

That's an assumption that might not be true. It depends on the hardware and
if it's proprietary. For example laptops from the OEMs. The new laptops
are coming with Vista, and some of the OEMs are not providing XP drivers for
some of them. It's a cost issue. So don't assume there are or will be XP
drivers. You have to do some research before making changes.

Hello Rock:

I re-partition my disk and created a new partition for Windows 2003 or XP.
I followed instructions sted here:

http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=88231

I got stuck at the "Install Windows..." with both XP and Windows 2003 step
when running setup.

I got a message that setup did not find any hard drives installed in my
computer.
I have ST 3320820As hard drive. Do I miss drivers or there is some other
problem?

You need to press F6 when prompted after the installation CD starts and then
supply the drivers for the SATA controller.

Hi:

Yes, I have Barracuda ST3320820AS 320 GB HD (large volume). I am
searching internet for drivers for either XP or Windows Server 2003. If I
can find them then I am willing to try to install one of them (preferebly NT)
them as dual (with Vista) operating systems. If it will work. If if does not
then I would forget for the moment Vista. I still need drivers for the SATA
hard drive. Anyone knows where I can downolad them?
