Vista / IE7 download preferences..

Hi...

everytime I click a link to download an mp3 file, it starts the download in
the background without offering me the choice to choose a location. I would
like the option to select where I want to download the file and how to open
it...at present, once it downloads, it opens with the Quicktime plugin via
the browser which is not ideal...especially as Winamp is my default mp3
associated player.

With XP, I could just go into Tools -> Files Types -> Advanced and choose
the option to confirm open after download but that function has been removed
with Vista which is a pain.

I'm aware I can just right click the link and choose to 'save target as' but
I just want the prompt box to pop up and ask me what to do with the file.

I have tried resetting all zones to default level as suggested in another
thread but that did not make any difference for mp3 files so if someone out
there is able to direct me to a registry tweak to force the prompt box, that
would be cool....or if there's another way to do things, i'm all ears :)

Thanks..

Nick

Nevermind....have found the fix with the help of TuneUp Utilities and
studying some registry snapshops.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions]
"AlwaysPromptWhenDownload"=dword:00000001

Hope that helps someone else.

Thanks :)

You can do the same thing in IE 7 with going to the registry.

Thanks Mr Arnold but that's a completely different setting for the
information bar.

Well, I just went to a site that had mp3(s) for download, right-clicked the
link for a mp3 download, it gave a pop-up menu screen, it had the Save
Target AS menu option and it allowed me to save the file to the HD to any
location I wanted, allowing me to browse to a location on the HD.

I didn't go this far, but when selecting the <c> or an existing folder on
<c>, I could have right-clicked to make a (new folder) and saved the file to
the newly created folder.

I didn't set any registry entry, make a registry entry or did I go to IE7 to
make a setting to prompt for the download, which you're correct, that
setting wouldn't have done what was needed in the link I provided.

What can I say?

i don't know man.

My first post said that I could do it that way (right click -> save target
as) but I wanted the download prompt to appear after LEFT clicking the link
which is the confirm open after download option. Previous to me setting the
"AlwaysPromptWhenDownload" registry value to 1, the mp3 file would download
in the background after left clicking, then load into the browser
plugin...that's what I wanted to change...not the right-click -> save target
action. I think it's something to do with QuickTime's mime settings.
Anyway...all works well now after left clicking the links so i'm happy.

Thanks for your replies mate :)

I'm hoping there is potential that you will still be monitoring this thread
somewhat??? I have the same problem of IE7 opening files instead of asking
where to save - my issue is with .zip though. I did at one stage select 'do
not ask me again for this file type' when presented with the option to open
or save...I definitely chose save!

My conundrum is that I don't seem to be able to find the Registry key you
spoke of...in that same spot in registry, I only have:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\SystemCertificates and,
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
they key you mentioned:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions]
is not present :/

Any other suggestions on how I may be able to rectify this error in
judgement on my behalf?

Cheers,
