Vista -How do I upgrade a upgrade ?

Guest

i currently have Vista Business 32 bit here which I then upgraded to Vista
Ultimate 32 VIA online upgrade option. So all here is 32 bit

Im thinking about going to the ultimate 64 bit version, but don't see an
option to upgrade via that route. According to the site, i would need to
enter my Vista Business license , then order a 64 bit version of it. But
thats not what i want, I want to upgrade from my Ultimate 32 version I did
from the internet to the 64 bit version of ultimate.

Unless im missing something, i dont see how i can upgrade to 64 bit ultimate
from my original Business 32 DVD.

I hope I am explaining this well enough to understand

I was under the impression that Ultimate came with 32 and 64-bit versions.
Copied this from site:
64-bit DVD
If you bought Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, or Business as a
retail, packaged product, and you would like a DVD of 64-bit software media
to install on your PC, please choose your language:

INTLEnglish-

Note: 64-bit media is included in the box with Windows Vista Ultimate.

Silly of me to ask...but you do have 64-bit architecture, right?

Yes I have a e6600 dual core.... but see the problem is, i already updated
from the retail business 32 bit version to the online upgrade of Vista
ultimate 32. So im wondering how I would go about getting a 64 bit version
of ultimate from the allready vista ultimate 32... here is what i did...

Vista 32 business ---> upgraded via online to vista 32....now i want to get
Vista 64 bit.... this is where im lost, as the ultimate wasnt a retail
version on DVD, it was an upgrade online...

gosh this hard to explain....

I guess you'll have to go out and buy a 64bit Ultimate.....because you
cannot upgrade a 32bit OS to a 64bit OS............clean install only

Oh i know i will have to do that...... but what im asking is, they are
offering people an upgrade choice from there original purchase. All im
hopeing is that i could get some kind of upgrade choice as I have ultimate
already, but only thru an upgrade from the internet.....It doesn't look liek
they are offering anyone upgrade choices if they wen the internet route.

Hi,

It is indeed complicated. I believe what you would need to do is exchange
your Business Vista 32-bit for 64-bit, then install it and use your upgrade
license to get Ultimate. To install 64-bit (any version), you can't upgrade,
you have to clean install. Anytime Upgrade in turn simply unlocks the bits
on the disk you have (but first you need an x64 disk), and has to run from
within the install being upgraded.

Pete...

i just thought of something.... i do own x64. Do you think, I could
resinstal that...Then use my anytime vista upgrade disk to download the
ultimate version(that i own) from the digital locker, and see if it includes
a 64 bit version.

Thanks Rick..... Do you think I could use my xp x64 disc as i posted above?

Im wonderign though, it says ' the retail box version has 32 and 64 bit
included" but mine was thru the online service to get ultimate..i wonder if
that also includes the 64 bit verion..and ultimelty if i can access it that
way.

Hi,

You can't use the XP disk for anything from Anytime Upgrade. That is
strictly for upgrading an existing Vista installation to a higher version.
The download is to unlock the bits that are on a disk that you have in your
possesion (all editions are on the disk, it is the product key that unlocks
the version you purchase). You have a license to upgrade Business Vista to
Ultimate, and that will work with either 32 or 64 bit, but you need to have
the disk first. The only disk you have to offer for exchange is the Business
32-bit, so that is the one you need to exchange. Only Ultimate ships with
both versions in the box, but you would have had to purchase a retail
Ultimate for that.

Ok Rick, thank you so much....... i just ordered the 64 bit version of my
business.... $10.00 bucks, thats all it costs..wow, i was surprised.... I
added fast expiditing to it, so it will take up to 5 days to get, so total
cost is $16.84..quite surprising....

The real sweet part about it is, my Vista business edition is from my action
pack, so this is indeed a sweet deal.

So when i get the disk..i will do a fresh instal of Business 64 bit.... then
go to anytime upgrade, then install my ultimate license to from the digital
locker.... And it shoud instal the 64 bit version, seeing as this is what it
is upgrading. Does this sound alright rick?

again thank you so much..It was hard for me to explain this ..im glad you
swung buy to help me..thanks bro///

Hi Datagg,

I have run into the same problem as you.

I originaly purchased vista premium 32bit. Then used Anytime to upgrade to
ultimate, which now like yours sits in my digital locker.

Deep Breath !

I have since built a brand new pc system which is 64 bit. I have ordered
premium 64bit which cost around £7, not bad.

Now this is where it gets interesting, like you, when after installing
premium 64 bit and when i attempt to install my digital locker vista ultimate
" will it install the 64 bit version ????". You cant imagine the amount of
people i have asked this. And the strange thing is, no one knows.

At present i'm still waiting for my 64bit premium to arrive by post.

Please could you let me know if it works.

Thanks

Ian

Hiya Ian...

i just did the instal the other night, and it was a snap.... When you get
your migration dvd, pop it in.....youll have to do a clean instal..... then
once that is done, go to your digiatl locker, save license to your comp, it
will ask you to put in your dvd, this will be your 64 bit version....it has
the upgrade anytime right on it..... just do as you did before, but this time
press upgrade....all done...

64 bit works flawlessly..so much better than 32 bit....i was truly
impressed..good luck ian

I just received mine, and like you say it went on with no problems at all.
The only thing that is bugging me is the fact my microsoft onecare does not
work with vista 64bit. Can you believe it!

Iv'e subscribed to the damm thing for a year, and now it is redundant due to
me using 64bit. Can you tell me a good security program that supports Vista
64bit.

Regards

Ian

I use Avast! on Vista Ultimate x64. Works well. I use Windows Defender for
antispyware and the Windows Firewall.

Glad all went well Ian. Im nto a fan of one care, it lets allot of things
slide by that shouldn't. I use Kaspersky internet securty(kis) and it works
great. Virus, firewall, you name it its makes sure your protected. Also,
with Kaspersky you have no need to run anything else. So it will disbale your
windows firewall, which is a good thing anyways, as its not that good. Also,
you will have no need to use windows defender either, kaspersky does it all.

I hope this helps.... and congrats on getting your 64 bit going, Its a rock
solid OS.

Windows firewall only monitors inbound traffic, nothing outbound, So its
really not a good firewall. Avast is pretty good...but id use kaspersky, as
it is 1 entire system of protection....and is the number 1 virus, spyware
progam out today.

My mistake, vista is, xp isnt..... still as far as firewalls go, it is weak
in comparison to kaspersky.......that can be seen easily jusy by doing some
google work.... The best of both worlds is to have a router, and a software
firewall....
