"non-Academic" verson. It's not OEM. What's the catch for being so cheap????

You have to be a student or in the teaching profession in order
to use an academic version of Windows Vista.

A little bit of both.
For some academic licenses, the license to use expires when you leave the
particular educational institution.
Review the applicable EULA before purchasing.
Be informed.

how do they know you graduated school though? That's what the OP was asking?
Will Microsoft come knocking and say hand over the DVD you graduated you
can't use it anymore?

Your always a student of life, as I was told when I ordered student office

If you've got kids, you've got a good 13-20 years of qualifying for
academic licences.

Or a family member?

If it's like OFFICE aren't you supposed to stop using it if you are no
longer a student? <g>

Well, I finally got the catch I was interested: for now, it's being
distributed as 32-bit only, and one cannot use it to upgrade to any superior
version. Just that...
