Usually you get a bit of warning they're about to go but you're right -
people should back up.

Backup your email, if that is all that is important. It is very easy.
Outlook uses a folder called a .pst to store email find it and save it or
export it using outlook. If you use outlook express you are out of luck I
think, I have not tried windows mail yet.

My 30 day trial is up and I am unable to use Vista RTM, so backing up
the emiail is out of the question. I bought an OEM copy of Vista this
morning from Newegg.com. I suppose it won't ship till the 30th but
them I will prolly do a fresh install. I thought I could just get it
activated online, but am afraid it's too late for it.

Depends how desperate you are, but you can download a copy of Knoppix
from http://www.knoppix.org/, burn it onto a cd and boot from the CD,
then find the outlook.pst file from your hard drive (Knoppix has
ntfs-3g so can read and write ntfs partitions) and save it onto a usb
memory stick.

..pst is for Outlook, not Outlook Express. Outlook Express has .dbx
files. Are you saying that Windows Mail doesn't have a way to back up or
is it that you just don't know how to do it? And, if the latter, what in
the world are you doing being a beta tester if you don't know that and
the difference between Outlook and Outlook Express' message stores?
