Vista HDD space to large

Hi all,

I have a new Toshiba notebook that came preinstalled with Vista Home Premium.
I have removed/uninstalled ALL the junk that came on the PC so the only
things on it now are the OS and some Toshiba stuff related to the speech
system.

I have even set the space for System restore down to only 2.5GB from 5GB.
I have cleaned all that I can off the PC but can not get the HDD space used
down to less than 12GB. I can't believe that Vista takes up THAT much room?
Even with the Toshiba pgms on it. Have emptied the recycle bin and did disk
cleanup many times.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I might be missing getting rid of??
I am trying to get the HDD space used as low as I can go in order to make a
first basic image for backup purposes (using Acronis True Image). Then I
will start installing applications. I have even deleted all the MS installed
AVirus and other junk!!

Thanks a bunch for your help!!

Its possible that a Recovery Image is on the disk or partition for
reinstalling the System back to a factory state. Have you browsed the root
of the drive to see if there any device drivers or OEM specific data there?
I wouldn't delete it, but back it up. Whats the size of the entire hard disk
btw?

I think that's it, the OP is looking at the restore partition.

Right-click Computer, select "Manage". Click Disk Management.

This brand new Dell has 3 partitions, a 63MB for EISA Configuration
(whazzat?), a 10GB Recovery and an active 288GB system.

The EISA Configuration partition contains the diagnostic tools that you will
be asked to run if you contact Dell support and are unable to boot Windows.

Andre,

No other images on HDD - only other partition is a Boot Loader for the
special Explorer or Media player button, and that only is 1.4GB.
The total HDD space is rated 120GB but it actually comes down to about 110GB
true size!
I use a partitioner pgm to divy the HDD up as 3 diff. partitions: one for OS
& applications, one for My Data, and last one for backup images.

If there is a way I can include jpg's to actually show you guys what things
look like, if that wud help?

And for the other person who answered this post and has a Dell:

Dell normally has HDD divied up as 3 parts with 2 of them sometimes
(usually), hidden. The one with the utils to help THEM mess with your PC is
not needed as you can always download the pgms to your system when and IF
they are needed, so makes sense to give the space back to your system.

If you use an imaging pgm to make backups - you also do not need the restore
partition, who would want to restore the PC with all the crap that Dell puts
on it?
That is what the Dell Decrapifier is for!!!! OOps -- they made him change
the name!! So he calls it the PC Decrapifier now!!
I have been there -- done that!

More info on Dells on request. ;>)
