Vista hangs on shutdown

Anyone?
I get a blue screen of death at shutdown shortly after the shutting down
circle. It then restarts with a message that Windows didn't shut down
properly and starts up with the safe mode screen choice. This was not a
problem for the past two months that I have been running Ultimate and only
recently started. I tried un-installing McAfee and it appeared to solve the
problem. I then installed the trial Live One and it has started again. Has
anyone had a similar problem? I heard that some video card drivers could be
at fault but mine worked well for the first two months. Is it coincidence
that removing the McAfee seemed to end my problems?

I have the same problem too and I assume that problem is caused by my thumb
drive using readyboost and I also installed OneCare...

I would suggest download all the lastest drivers on the net and use Windows
Update...

Larry.... I also had McAfee, but with the numerous problems it created with
VISTA, I had to uninstall McAfee completely. Now I use AVAST! which is a free
virus/firewall scanner. I've been pretty happy with it.

In addition, your problem could also be from any recent software that you
have installed, so you may need to update your drivers. GOOD LUCK

Am still battling with the refusal to shut down, working my way through
disabling all the mysterious applications that seem to be in startup be
default. I have McAfee installed when shipped by Dell, and hope that isn't
the culprit. Haven't disabled it yet but I suppose I'll have to try that too.

I have a Dell Inspirion 1521 and my offending program was DLG.exe (some kind
of Digital Line util) shipped from Dell. I also turned off sleep mode and
everything seems fine now. The USB suggestion had no effect either way.

A diagnostic startup showed the shut down problem with my PC (Vista Ultimate,
32 bit) to be with the WLAN service, specifically, two internet connections
going at the same time (LAN and a wireless access point). Problem stopped
when I shut down the wireless automatic connect.

Hi Guys,
I feel your pain. I've been working on a Vista laptop for a few days
now that has had the same issue. Hanging at shut down. The only thing
that did work briefly was when I uninstalled the users HP software. All
of a sudden I was able to reboot successfully about 5 times. The 6th
time however, I was back where I started. Man i hate Vista.
Anyway, I troubleshooted EVERYTHING. I tried startup programs, running
processes, RAM, Hardware, drivers, SP1, updates, registry hacks,
disabling wireless connections, you name it.
I think I FINALLY found the fix. Was on the Dell site (the laptop is an
Inspiron E1505) and I found a Microsoft Hotfix specifically for
Bluetooth enabled Vista machines that are hanging.
Just wanted to share it with you guys. It has worked so far...

'When you try to shut down a Windows Vista-based computer on which a
Bluetooth device is installed, the computer stops responding'

Good Luck!!!

I've had several HP laptop shutdown probs

They were solved, twice by doing a bios update which also updates
other drivers, on instruction from an hp tech
and once from a mvp, who informed me my network driver was showing up
as causing shutdown woes in a dmp file
