running vista sp2 with all updates excl ie8 on a hp 6715b laptop with
4gb memory

Last couple of days had performance issues
on doing a reboot got a hang on terminal services... (excuse the lack
of detail)
so had to turn off to get a hard shutdown
on start was offered safe etc, chose start normally

1st got 'interactive services detection stopped working and was
closed, closely followed by
2nd service layer module stopped working and was closed

what do you recommend?

Were you able to go into services and restart those two items?

start search > type *services *> hit enter > accept the UAC > find the
two services that were shutdown and try to re-enable them > double click
the service > choose start.

I did a system restore, but that that did not complete satisfactorily
I'll try what you say if those points recur,

should I persist with restore and go back further?

From your description, you were having performance problems and it's now
manifesting it self into severe problems.

You should run diagnostics on your hardware, memory then on the hard drive.

see below

Have you downloaded anything malicious or anything not from a trusted
site?

No

Has the printer worked before the hard shutdown?

Yes
After?

No, but having done a restore, albeit one that said 'system restore
did not complete successfully' the printer is now back online
Have you had any blue screens?
had one 10 days ago

Have you tried re-enabling those
services?
when they become disabled again I'll try

Ran system diagnostics
Disk, there is less than 15% free space, only 6gb, I assume this is
not a big issue

security centre says I'm not running antivirus, but I am, Avira

memory disgnostics require a reboot so I will post back later

Can you look at the errors in the event logs?
