vista doesn't recognise device

Hi,

I have recently purchased a Samsung SGH-U600 mobile phone. The phonetools
that come with the phone and the drivers on the software CD are not
compatible with win Vista so I downloaded the appropriate software/drivers
from the Samsung website. I loaded PC Studio 3 and installed the drivers.
However, when I connected the phone via the data usb cable (supplied with
the phone) I got a message did not recognise USB device and then the pc
studio software fires up with an error message COM server registration
failed. Please restart the system. When I click on the text bubble that says
unrecognised usb device, a list of ports appears (10 root ports) and at port
#5 it is highlighted Unknown Device (presumably my phone). Another thing
that happens is that I get a windows error message saying that Launcher.exe
failed to start. I have uninstalled/reinstalled the software and drivers a
dozen times and nothing seems to work. I really do need this to work as all
of my important contacts/data etc is on my pc.

I know that a lot of you will say take this up with Samsung but I cannot
locate a number for Samsung UK tech help.

Most driver programs for usb connected devices request that the usb device
be connected when the driver is installed, after which it concludes. What
version of Vista are you using, and are you sure you have the correct driver
program for both your model of Samsung and Vista (64 or 32-bit)

Hi John,
I am using vista 32bit HP and I have the correct driver. I installed the
driver then connected the device which fires up the >>>>driver install icon
on the taskbar then I get the unrecognised usb device bubble and when I
click on it it says that a driver has been installed for an unknown device

Hi guys,
This definately is a Vista problem, The mobile phone is now recognised in
the device manager but the PCstudio software which should recognise the
phone on connection keeps displaying an error message Com Server
Registration Failed, if I then go on to close the program I get an error
message saying that Launcher.exe failed to respond. What is Com Registration
and how do I get vista to register it?

You need to check with the developer of the software to see if it is Vista
compatible. In the meantime you can see if you can get it to run in XP
compatibility mode. Right click on the .exe for the program and select
compatibility, then select one of the modes available. Works for some
programs and not for others.

I thought I'd look into the issue with my USB devices again tonight
after I realised that it wasn't just my USB stick that didn't work, it
was my phone too. I think the problem was with any USB device that
wasn't attached when I installed Vista, maybe, maybe not.

Anyway, I discovered that if you copy a version of 'usbstor.inf' that
you will find in a sub-dir on your C:\ drive to C:\WINDOWS\INF, then
delete any unrecognised devices then re-scan it finally resolved the
issue. Took AGES when searching for software at this screen but fixed
in the end.

Let me know how you get on.
