Vista Defrag versus Diskeeper

K

Ken

I have been a Diskeeper fan for years. However, I just had to reinstall
Vista Ultimate and am having a minor problem getting Diskeeper to register
2007 Professional for the second time on the "same" machine but in a
different partition. When I started to look at what was in Vista I stumbled
into the built in Defrag program. Any recommendations/opinions - should I
just shelve Diskeeper 2007 and use the Vista version? What about the 2008
versions of Diskeeper - any reasons to buy yet another version?

disk keeper is about a trillion times superior than the stupid, dumbed down,
mysterious, non user friendly, hidden, uneffective, degraded, downgraded
version of the defragmenter thats built into Vista.

Get diskeeper 2008 if you can since the whole program has been revamped, its
a fantastic product...

there are also 2 free degragmenters that you might want to use in combo with
the vista one that runs a s service, if you want to skip buying the
diskkeeper upgrade *unless you are entitled to a free upgrade or a discount*

here are the free ones (the first one works quite well)

http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag

take a look at those free ones too ...

Vistas one is good as a service but as you noticed it has no feedback
(VISUAL)
in combo with those free ones perhaps you may manage ..

but diskeeper as you must know since you are an old user has smart placment
and other
tricks up it sleave that vistas built in one and these free ones dont have

Im posting this info because others might be reading this thread and want to
try alternative
free programs...

It's a pity the dumbed down mysterious built in defrag of Vista is
Diskeeper, just like it was with XP. With Vista having a minor upgraded NTFS
the built in one is just fine, there's no need for display except for the
anal that must have proof something is working.

you are incorrect, this all depends on how you use the computer

for old grannies that don't download or shift around lots of files in their
computer or leave it on all night doing nothing so it can idle and start
defragging, contributing to global warming, the stupid one of vista is ok.
For those who don't mind their hard disk to thrash with no visual feedback
to why this is happening, its ok. Those same people
might not care if its malware erasing their files that's thrashing their
disk. For those who don't care if the defrag with take 1 hour
or 100 hours its ok....

dumbed down, it stinks big time

For us power users.. its .. less good than XP's built in one.

Please be careful with the latest version of Diskeeper 2008. I have
Vista 64 Home Premium with SP1 and the boot time defragmentation totally
trashed my Windows Vista installation. I had to reinstall Vista and all
my applications. I am now using Perfectdisk 2008 with boot time
defragmentation with no problems.

Also be aware that any program that modifies the hard drive before Windows
loads (like any type of boot time defragmentation) will totally wipe out all
restore points and shadow copies on the drive.

Found this out the hard way with Diskeeper.

Many thanks for the prompt response.

When I attempt to load an Acronis True Image Home 11 image I get the
following message:-

"Partition Error

The selected partition contains the following error: Run list corrupted.
Please note that you cannot change the file system and size of this
partition. It is recommended that you check these partitions after
restoration with your operating system disk tools."

I then ran a utility provided by Acronis which told me "File system error:
22 (Block bitmap corrupted)"

I hope that this information is helpful.

Try this for side!

In Vista 32-bit defrag works OK; BUT in Vista 64-bit my 232GB 'C' drive with
only 60GB on it after a defrag has grown to 162GB of used space. The first
time I had
Vista 32 in C drive and Vista 64 on D drive. So I removed C drive and just
had the new C drive and it has happened again.

Yes I have started with a clean disk all over again and it still happens. It
also does it with Auslogics Disk Defrag as well.

This is doing my head in.

I found the answer. In Disk Cleanup under 'hibernation' whatever that is? I
found 9GB of files, then did a duplicate file check and for another 4GB.

Vista seems a bit top heavy with to many things going on without the users
knowlage or permission. The Help Files don't even cover this as does not and
book or article I have read on Vista.

Yes, disk cleanup is definitely a keeper - I put a shortcut to my desktop
and will run it occasionally, I used to use this option via the Langa
batch files in XP. This is easier.
