Vista & Computers

Firstly -This post is not against Vista OS in any way.
I Installed Vista HP back in Jan 07, onto (let's just say a well endowed
computer) and every thing works very well, a few minor compatibility issues
but nothing of any real significants. Have also set up printer & file sharing
with 2 other computers, again no real problems.
To me Vista is a operating system that requires understanding and any one
contemplating installing the OS should research and plan their move carefully.
There is nothing, in my opinion, seriously wrong with Vista.
Having said that, one of my friends bought a new Acer notebook with Vista
Basic installed, and to say the least the performance of the notebook leaves
a lot to be desired, not because of Vista but the PC is not up to scratch.
It has Celeron M inside running at 1.6hz, 512 Ram, the graphics card is
integrated, Acer has preloaded so many startup applications it takes approx
8/10min to loadup, with so many applications running in the background, just
to load a program such as Internet Exp. it takes approx. 1/2mins.
This has nothing to do with Vista, it solely the way Acer have set up the
notebook, Acer are not the only ones, to many manufacturers are selling
machines (Vista installed) that maybe are not suitable for the OS.
After trimming the notebook down of startup apps, and a few tweaks and
Readyboost the machine is now showing a vast improvement. Installing more Ram
is next on the list.
When buying or upgrading a PC with Vista, users should ensure that they
choose wisely after thorough planning & preparation
I am not an IT specialist, I just research, plan & prepare what I wish to do.

u r rt ! its such pre-loaded crapware on oem m/c's that create problems, imo.
PC DeCrapifier is a good utility to remove unwanted craplets.

The problem, of course, is that most users are not up to that sort of
tinkering to make a new system work - and they should not have to be.

Very true and a shame.

I see many non-technical users where preinstalled background practices have
been running for years without their knowledge.

I also see users all the time who have high speed processors with pitiful
performance on machines crippled by inadequate RAM. On many XP machines
purchased with 256MB the installation of a multifunction printer alone slows
the computer to a crawl. They can't believe the difference after upgrading
this to 512MB. And now the same equivalent with so many computers sold
with 512MB for Vista.....

The vendors who claim they have to do these tings to be competitive are the
same ones who have driven this mess. Most people would gladly spend another
$50 to $100 dollars at the outset if they knew what they were getting. And
you're right that they should not have to be experts to get a cost effective
quality PC.

That's absolutely positively untrue, I've been in business too long to
believe that! There are some who will spend extra but the majority
want the lowest bottom line and will drive 100 miles to save $0.39 on a
major appliance/automobile/computer. That's not opinion, I learned
that by actually losing sales for insignificant amounts.

As long as the manufacturer says the computer will run (and a slow
Celeron with 512m of ram WILL run Vista.) it'll sell. The customer
saves a buck and he can enjoy that savings and brag about it to his
friends while waiting 20 minutes for his computer to boot up... <SIGH>

Heh, Bob: You may want to look at www.vista-computers.info and
www.vista-graphics.info for some specs on notebooks- It seems the
demand by Winodws Vista (above basic) for dedicated memory is real
since some much of the code runs better and faster on a separate GPU.
Espevcial CAD & Games. I have been watching prices finally dropping
on notebooks with their own GPU & dedicated menory (256MB or more) at
www.asystematics.com for HP & Dell. Picked up a new one this week with
their coupon code.Sweat- Ali Oop
