vista business & linux ubuntu: hd partitions.

Hello there,
I 've just bought a notebook acer travelmate 6592g, Intel Core 2 Duo
T7300, Ram 4 Gb, HDD 160GB (5400rpm), with Windows Vista Business.
I'd like to use both Vista and Linux Ubuntu. How many partitions do I
have to make (and how many Gb each one) considering there is a hidden
recovery partition made by acer of about 10 Gb and I want a personal
partition for my documents and files?

You 'need' two partitions for Ubuntu - one swap partition and one for the
OS. Many folks prefer more than that, but it suffices.

You can use a swap file, so you only need one partition. Assuming you
make the swap file soon after installation, so that it is unlikely to be
fragmented, there is no performance difference between a swap file and a
swap partition on Linux.

Most Acers come from the factory with three partitions. A factory restore
partition, the OS partition and a data partition. The built in backup
programs use the data partition so you may want to keep it around. To
install Ubuntu decide how much space you want to give it. I suggest at least
30 to 40 GB. Although Vista can shrink partitions it's ability to do this is
quite limited. I'd use a third party application like Acronis Disk Director
Suite 10.0 to create some free space for Ubuntu. Whichever program you use
make sure it is Vista compatible. Some programs like older versions of
Partition Magic and Disk Director Suite don't work with Vista and may cause
problems. Create 30 to 40 GB of free space but do not partition it. leave it
as unallocated space. Boot from the Ubuntu CD and tell it to install to this
unallocated space. Let it partition this space as it sees fit.

Note: Make sure you have created a couple of copies of the Acer Recovery
DVDs before you do this. Make sure you have at least two backups of any
important data.
