Vista Complete System Backup error

Hello -

Been browsing through but haven't found a post that addresses this. I'm
running Vista Business on a Compaq Presario V3000 series laptop. I just
bought an external hard drive (LaCIE, 500GB) that I've got connected.

I want to backup my computer fully onto the external drive. I started the
process the other night, and everything went smoothly - until the very end,
when I got an "I/O error".

There's plenty of room on the drive (I'm only using about 50GB on it so
far), so that can't be it. No problems with connections or drivers;
everything else works smoothly with respect to this external drive.

And even though the wizard told me there was an I/O error, and didn't act
like it was finished, there's a backup folder that takes 70GB or so (about
the size of the stuff on my internal disk) ... but I don't want to trust this
file as a true backup source, given the I/O error.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi Ed,

Are you using LaCIE's backup software for this? It doesn't list Vista as
being a compatible OS, only XP and 2000.

If you are using the internal pc backup utility, then you may need to check
for a firmware update for the drive. An I/O error can have a number of
causes, not the least of which is the hardware's inability to interpret an
instruction it receives from the operating system.

Thanks, Rick

I'm using HP's internal PC backup function. So I'll check for a firmware
update, as you suggest.

Cheers!
