Vista believes and see's Ghosts. I don't

I suspected the search engine was trash when I 1st used it.

Yesterday actually confirmed it.

I repeated a search I'd done weeks earlier in the same folders.
Since that 1st search, I'd removed much of the stuff since it was simply a processing folder I used for organization prior to burning to a DVD, then deleting from the HD permanently.

yesterday, I searched again, and it came up with the exact same name and a thumbnail from the original movie clip.

When I tried to open it from the search, WMP said there was an error.
When I used 'go to folder', the folder was empty.
When I tried to delete it from the search, then it said the file no longer exists... Duh!!!

Can this Vista search be fixed to find ONLY what's on the drive instead of what's BEEN on the drive ?
This explains so much about the screwed up searches I've seen with Vista.
Can't scan system folders, can't find folders, misses certain type files..

Hi keepout,

You need to rebuild the Search Index. Vista will eventually cycle the
item out of the search index, but if you do a lot of changes it may take
a bit to cycle it.

I found this indexing options long ago.... They need to reinstall the XP search that had at least 3 levels of usage.
I set mine to never using the thing. And never came up with results from a week ago.
Talk about adding to bloat...

This thing still doesn't show how to avoid these worthless ghost searches.

And the file types selected to find explain so much about why this searchisn't worth much.
I've had to resort to using a 3rd party program for searches that only searches TODAY'S drive status.

Just have to keep it in mind that the search bar is useless.
Now how do I get windows explorer to quit sending what I type straight tothe search engine ? That was the problem. The folder has many files in it, and I only wanted to find those with text I knew in them.
XP I could type a letter, and jump to the beginning of files beginning with that letter.

I have to agree with you. To an extent I like it a lot (typing "goo" in the
start menu takes me to google's web site). But whenever I try to search for
a particular file, I never end up finding it. I'm unsure what is going on it
with most of the time.

I found Windows Desktop Search on xp a lot better for file searching.

Quite frankly, I never liked the Search Indexing either. I would
disable it and use the regular more thorough (slower) search instead.

Folder Options and Search tab.
