I have been automatically backing up my files and now I want to start a
brand new backup. I have gone into the backup wizard to change settings,
selected the device and the settings and then it comes up with

'Microsoft Windows Backup has stopped working
Windows will close the program and notify if a solution is available'

There is bags of room on the disc. - I have tried re-booting but still the
problem occurs

Any ideas as to how to resolve/overcome ?

You perhaps should give more detail. Is it internal disk or external USB
plugged in disk. Is it the same disk that Vista used for automatic backups
before you changed settings? If it is a new disk like Mybook, have you
formatted it to NTFS?

Some of the questions may seem superfluous to you but you will have to give
details.

My speculation on the basis of limited information you supplied and my
personal experience is that you have an external HDD and you've got a USB
ports trouble. If you've got a laptop, I won't be able to help you. With a
desktop it is easier. Some posts here may provide guidance. If your Vista
breaks the backup in the middle after it already solidly started (this point
is also unclear from your description) then what you can do is to unplug ALL
USB appliances except mouse and keyboard and do the backup. In the most
extreme situation you may try to even get rid of the keyboard and do backup
with mouse alone and onscreen keyboard (Ease of access).

Are you trying to save to the same place?

Go to where the backups where being saved, delete
all that. Start over.

I don't understand. Number one she said there is tons of space on the disk.
Number two I am under the impression that Vista backs up over the previous
backup no questions asked. Isn't it true?

Hi

yes the back up device is a HDD usb with bags of space left. The backup
wiard asks to set up a new backup file to which subsequent changes will be
added. The advice within help is to never delete the latest back up file

Well, you better make sure that Vista sees this device pretty much as a
dedicated storage device for backups. It must be NTFS formatted or else. It
is better format it as default block size which is 4096.

If something is wrong and you do not need the stuff that is on this HDD, you
better reformat it in this Vista, not elsewhere . It might take quite a few
"minutes." After that you can do the backup without disconnecting the
device. If you did the formatting you may be certain that the connection is
solid. If the formatting failed on the way, troubleshoot the hardware.

I know this is the advice not to delete but what if you cannot backup on it?
What are you going to do? Keep this HDD as memory? Also you will not be
deleting the backup--you will be formatting the disk and Vista might take
this into account as far as registry goes.

Another thing before you do anything you may try to set a restore point
which is not a backup but it will allow you to restore the system to that
state if you do not like what you've got.

Also you said that Vista used to do the backup for you automatically. Where
is this backup? You must be able to go there and see the backup folder and
file name with the latest date. If there is no file anywhere that could have
been your illusion. Perhaps you misinterpreted some messages and in fact
there was no backup.

You can go to MSDN forums and in the upper top corner you will find a search
textbox. key it for Vista backups. You will get lots of useful information
to read for the next two days.

So i deleted the original backup file on the same disk and the new backup
seems to work - so the moral is that you can't have more than 1 backup on the
same disc, scary !!!!!!

Robin, I use a 160GB USB as a dedicated backup drive. With VHP, I did a
complete backup, and when the disk was half full, I did another complete
backup. I had 2 BU's. When the disk was full, I deleted the first BU and
did another complete backup. This cycle has worked for me....
