Assuming your hardware isn't made specifically for Vista and your
machine can run XP without any problems, set your BIOS to boot from the
CDROM, insert XP CD and follow the instructions to do a clean install.
If you have any data you want to save, save it before proceeding as this
will erase *everything* from your hard drive.

thanks "Alias", how can I find out if it's specifically made for vista? I'm a
bit of a novice, but will try !

Go to the manufacturer website and look for XP drivers that will work with
your model. If you can't find any, XP will be a 'no-go'..

Change can be tough. You could take the machine back and try to get one
with XP.

You could try to figure out Vista so it does as you say "recognize half of
what XP does".

I dual boot, mostly in Vista now, and don't have any problems at all with
Vista. You saying "it doesn't recognise half of what XP does and I refuse
to buy replacements grrrrr" is too wide a brush. What exactly are you
having a problem with?

for example, I have a sony cybershot camera, have checked every where for
driver updates etc but it's not supported by either vista or sony, hp all in
one printer, same story, xp was so simple to use no probs at all.

Is it a laptop or desktop? What brand name? Is the sound card or the
video card a part of the motherboard or separate cards?

Many cameras have two modes for interacting with the computer. One is as a
'camera', this mode usually requires specific drivers for that camera. The
second mode is as an external drive. This does not require extra drivers as
it is just like plugging in a USB thumb drive. You might check your camera
manual for any mode settings involved.

As for Sony Cybershot camera, (not sure your model number is) You can check
to see if it's supported here on this website
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/news-item.pl?&news_id=149&mdl=DSCP52#gen, and
download the new software for visita for it.

I have a HP All In one printer (Not sure of your model number, but I have a
HP All In One 1401), and I'm using vista, so just go to this website
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1103491&lang=en
and download this software. Save both in your documents, and perhaps burn it
to a cd for future use. Hope this helps!

Sometimes you can trick Vista. First, download the XP driver install
program. Right click it, choose properties then Compatibility. Check the Run
in Compatibility Mode for XP.
Now close and again right click that install program. Choose Run as
Administrator.

If the first 'install' only expands files for a second type of 'setup'
program that you have to run manually, repeat the steps above for the
Setup.exe (or whatever name) they want you to use.

I used hp all in one printer back when vista was still in beta & rc releases
it was the only printer i found to work with vista. model psc 1315
