Vista Attachment Issue

Every time I try to open an attachment from someone who does not have Vista I
get symbols and numbers which make no sense. When I send a document to
someone who doesn't have Vista they can't read my attachment or it is off
format. Is there a download I can install to fix the problem and make Vista
compatible with XP users?
