Maybe the MS Word Viewer would be useful.

Works and Word are not the same program even though they both come from
Microsoft and are both word processors. Some versions of the Works suite
included Word, obviously yours did not. You can download openoffice and be
able to read your word files. You can also have all the word files sent to
you in rtf (rich text format) which both processors can read.

Microsoft Works is a separate product (in this case a productivity suite),
Microsoft Windows Vista is an Operating sytem created by the same company
Microsoft.

Which version of Microsoft Works are you running? My understanding is, the
latest version of Microsoft Works should be able to open/convert Microsoft
Office files created in Word or Excel.

You might want to post this problem in the follow newsgroup:
microsoft.public.works.win

MS Works is a cheap integrated office suite for the home user. MS Office is
the full commercial quality suite.

If you want to be able to work with MS Office files without spending $$$$$
on MS Office, you can download the open source 'Open Office'
http://www.openoffice.org/

Please note that some features used in MS Office documents may not be
available in Open Office

They're both made by Microsoft, but they are quite different.

As John Inzer said, you can download a free viewer for Word files at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/HA010449811033.aspx

That will allow you to see Word files but not to alter them at all. To
do that, you'll need to buy Word, or download Open Office
(www.openoffice.org), a free, open-source office suite that can read
MS Office files.

They are not compatible programs. In order to process MS word files you
will need an office suite. Two choices would be MS Office or
OpenOffice.org (which you can download, install and use for free). Both
have similar capabilities. There is also a free MS word reader, but it
won't allow you to change or write the files.

The fact that they are both Microsoft programs is irrelevant. Works
and Word are two very different programs with two different file
formats. Works is a very low-level suite of Office products, compared
to Microsoft Office (which includes Word).

A Cadillac and a Chevrolet Cobalt are both General Motors products,
but that doesn't mean a Cadillac engine will fit into a Cobalt.

Works can not read Word .doc files. However if you have Works *Suite*
that should include Word. Check to see whether you have it installed;
if so, just open the .doc file in Word, not works.

Failing that, you can buy a copy of Word, either by itself or as part
of Microsoft Office. You can also acquire one of the other compatible
programs which can read .doc files, such as WordPerfect, StarOffice,
or the freeware OpenOffice.

Or if you just want to be able to read .doc files, not create or
modify them, you can download a free Word viewer at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/CD102258581033.aspx

I've been a works user for many years. As Andre said above, Works will
convert .doc to .wps, but you may lose *some* formatting.
