I assume you mean MS Office 2003. Office 2003 works just fine in Vista.
I had it installed on several machines and had no problems. What does
"cannot transfer" mean? You were advised what by whom at the time of
purchase? If someone at a store told you that Office 2003 doesn't work
in Vista, they lied to you. Perhaps they were trying to get you to buy
Office 2007.

Describe the files, what you are doing, and report the exact text of any
error messages.

I installed Office 2003 on my wife's new vista laptop and all is well.

Except that the Office Assistant animation add-ons don't work (not enough
memory??? 2 GB installed)

She misses the cat, but the default paper clip works, as do all the
applications.

What version of Office do you have installed? If it's downlevel from Office
2003, e.g., Office 2000, and the files you're trying to read were saved in
Office 2003 native format only, then, no you can't read them. The documents
would have to be saved in a compatible format for downlevel versions of
Office to read/write them.

Perhaps, this will help.

Open, edit, and save documents, workbooks, and presentations in the file formats new to
Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007.

Users of the Microsoft Office XP and 2003 programs Word, Excel, or PowerPoint—please install
all High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack.

By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office
2003, you will be able open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel,
and PowerPoint 2007. The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft
Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in
these new formats. For more information about the Compatibility Pack, see Knowledge Base
article 924074.
