Vista and HP LaserJet printer.

I use a HP LaserJet 1012 printer with two WinXP/2 PCs on a wireless network.
I also have a Vista laptop but Vista and the HP 1012 are not compatible.

Are there any signs that HP or MS will address this compatibility problem
any time soon? Is there a workaround?

You would need to ask HP this question since they are the *only* ones who
will write the drivers for their printer. If they have no plans to write
the Vista drivers for that model printer, then that's the end of that
story.

Hardware mftrs. write drivers for their devices - not the creators of
operating systems. All the hardware drivers that come with XP and Vista
were written by the various hardware mftrs. and provided to Microsoft for
inclusion.

HP seem to be terminally lazy in upgrading drivers for new OS's. I have two
perfectly good HP printers in the attic that have no compatible drivers for
Vista. My solution is to never buy HP again...

Hi Hugh.

Many thanks for your detailed response.
Are you saying that the printer is OK when connected to the XP PCs. Is the
PC-
Printer connection network or wire?

Answer. Printer works with both XP printers. One is connected by wire
(Ethernet)
The XP Laptop is connected wirelessly via a Print Server.
But if you try to print from the VISTA laptop (Is it networked to the PCs
or to
the printer direct?) that you can't print from the laptop to the printer?
Please clarify this.

Answer. The Vista PC is connected wirelessly to the printer direct via a
printer server.
Have you installed any printer driver on the VISTA laptop?

Answer. I tried to install the driver which came with the printer.
If so and if there is no VISTA driver for download from HP have you tried
using
an XP driver and using Compatibility mode in VISTA, as well as using Run as
Administrator?

Answer. Currently there is no Vista driver for the Laserjet 1012 available
from HP
(or I haven't been able to find it). I am very new to Vista and did not
think to look for
"Compatibility Mode." I'm about to try this approach.

Many thanks for your questions which were very helpful.

I have the hp laserjet 1012 and it works great! I had the same trouble as
you at first. I do believe I used the XP driver and was able to get it
installed but it still didn't work until a person in this NG suggested
checking the "Ports" under the properties for the 1012 printer. Has to be
DOT 4_00x Generic IEEE 1284. Maybe this will point you in the correct
direction. It was confusing because when the printer was on I always got
the USB connect sound so I knew at least Vista knew that the printer was
there.
