Hi,
I've had a Vista computer for 3 months now and have not been able to find a
simple flat bed scanner that will run under Vista. Can anyone direct me to a
maker of flat bed scanner for Vista????
Thanks

I have an older Epson flatbed that was not on the list of "approved"
VISTA scanners, but it runs just fine under the XP scanner software
Epson supplied with it. VueScan software also runs under VISTA and it
supports a variety of scanners.

You haven't looked very hard. I'm sure there are many. Personally, I'm
happy with my Canon LIDE60.

You may want to look into a all-in-one, printer, scanner, copier. I
too had a scanner, just a year old, and it wasn't supported by Vista
and it wasn't scheduled for a new driver either. It cost just a little
less then my Canon MP 600 which does:

1. high resolution scanning

2. copying (almost as fast as a copy machine)

3. printing from a memory card, directly from scanned photos
or some digital cameras

4. printing from a printer via USB 2.0.

All full high resolution full color.

You get all that for under $150 street plus a name brand, so unless
you need larger size for scanning something greater than 8.5 x 11,
then may be the way to go, I'm glad I did.

Yep, it comes with Vista drivers...right in the box and has a small
foot print too.

I have a 3 year old Lexmark multifunction which took awhile for Lexmark to
publish Vista dirvers. The scanner does't work under the Lexmark software,
but does just fine with "Windows Fax and Scan" from the start menu. If you
already have a scanner, you might want to try Windows Fax and Scan before you
make a decision to spend anymore money.

Mine even runs on Vista x64 I was amazed that Canon had 64 bit Vista
drivers ready as quickly as they did.

I'm running my very old HP SJ5P scanner using TWAIN that comes with the
even older HP Deskscan 2.9 software for it! Probably all vintage WIN95
<g>

What make and model of scanner do you have? Or are you looking for a
new one anyway?

Get yourself a copy of Vuescan. It runs fine in Vista and has drivers for
darn near everything. Its drivers should work with third party software
under Vista. If they don't, however, you can do most any scanning task
within Vuescan itself.

The scanner does't work under the Lexmark software,
but does just fine with "Windows Fax and Scan" from the start menu.

Sometimes it is the other way round if the device uses TWAIN which is
not supported by VISTA but which works from the software that supplies
the TWAIN link. This is true for my old HP SJ5P scanner.

My HP 5P came with an ISA SCSI adapter, but no new machines have an ISA
slot.
Unless there is a PCI SCSI card for it, I guess it goes in the recycle bin.
:(
If I ever get another free hour, I'll have to Google for it...unless someone
knows of a compatible card.

Hi Phil

We are using Canon Scanners here with no problems, updated Vista drivers and
software available via Canon website.

My HP 5P came with an ISA SCSI adapter, but no new machines have an ISA
slot.

I replaced that 8 bit card pretty early on when I had scsi hard drives on
my first well-powered desktop. I used an Adaptec 19160 later on, and still
do, because I wanted the wider scsi path for a new hard drive and the
19160 has the external connection that matches the cable for the SJ5P --
getting a new cable to match a simpler scsi controller would cost too much
just for the cable!

So if you can pick up an Adaptec 19160 go for it unless you need an excuse
to get a more modern scanner <g>

But if you Google on [Adaptec 19160 scsi card] you'll see that they are
horrendously expensive unless you find one on eBay.

You could check the spec for the external socket and look for a cheap PCI
card -- I've not done that.
