Vista 64 Unactivated itself

O

Oliver Gunnell

Been using Visa home premium X64 for about a month now,
I have a genuine oem version I bought from the store

I activated it online on the first day of use, then today a window
pops up telling me that it's no longer valid due to a "Hardware Change"
thing is I havent made one, been installing all windows updates as usual
but I have never touched any hardware since the time of install

The only thing I can think of, there was a update for my motherboard
(Nforce4) SATA controller
on windows update, can it be that vista now thinks it's a diffrent
motherboard??

Help I only have two days it's says to activate vista

Regards
Oliver

hello it was probably the controller.. vista is far more sensitive to
changes compared to XP .. but this does not mean you have a problem since:

You are entitled to reactivate an infinite number of times on the same
computer!
even if its OEM (preinstalled), and you have an infinite number of times to
reactivate
on different computers if you have retail, as long is you have vista on ONE
computer
at any given moment.

So reactivate by internet now, and if it doesnt like it, reactivate by
phone.

Our Panic is over then :) , I was surprised how easy they just gave the
code out
I thought they would be hardwork to explain the problem.

I wonder how many millions of MS representatives they must have to handle
all the volume of people...

they need to hire a small country.. say the size of china lol

that's because they're getting a taste of their own medicine.
you know how people are so annoyed at the constant UAC prompts that they
just start clicking through them all, thus defeating its purpose?
same thing here, the reactivation "associates" are so inundated with calls
that they just hand out one to everybody...
LOL

yes.. because they think that someone who is realy trying to trick microsoft
wont keep calling in...

but there is also another thing.. activation now calls in home very
frequently.. and perhaps they will able
to track pcs that use the same product key....

I bet they spend more on the activation program than they save on
stopping piracy. In the end, all they do is create irate paying
customers. Great PR move, that activation foolishness.

This is actually a bug with the new drivers (May 12th) and seems to be
limited to updating the sata drivers for Nforce based boards using the
Silicon Image chipset for the Sata.

In my case, Windows still reported has being activated, but was reporting
not being Genuine. I went round and round trying to get it re-activated, but
I couldn't de-activate it to re-activate it. When I tried to pass the
Geniune test, it would tell me I need to Activate windows First. I finally
found a way to deactivte my install., I just added another Gig of ram and I
got the activation option. I re-activated Windows, it says it was happy, but
still reported my version has not being Genuine.

The fix was to reload the Nvidia Nforce drivers (version 15.00) from the
www.Nvidia.com website

From the Techs I've talked to when I had the problem, it sounds like they
did have a country hired for it. Which I don't have so much of a problem
with, I just wish I could understand them a little better.

they outsource support

that is not a bad thing since they provide jobs for 3rd world countries

your description is a vista nightmare....

gesh!!! You could solve it because you know plenty.. but what about the non
technical folk??

I will agree that in this case, Microsoft didn't do a very good job of
testing that update before releasing it. That or it's a rare bug that only a
small percentage of people are getting.

Since MVP Richard Urban can reproduce the problem at will, hopefully a
update or other fix will be made, assuming he can get Microsoft to pay
attention.

The re-activation part I don't have a problem with, The part where it tells
me it's already activated, but not Genuine is annoying and I do have a
problem with it. In my case, the Activation phone support couldn't help me,
as they were telling me to go to an option that didn't exist.

But there should be a limit. IBM/lenovo was the last major OEM I could
call for support and still get connected to someone in the states. Now
with the layoffs, the last bastion of hope for tech jobs not being
outsourced is gone.

When I call HP support, I get someone in China.

Hi All,

After reading the messages here wasn't the update causing problems on nVidia
boards? If so nVidia have a hand in the blame as well as MS.
On outsoursing I find it amusing as I have great trouble understanding
people when I speak to them, but I think I have solved the problem for out
sourcing from China..
Hurro ris is Micrasof!

It's not limited to this. I have a 680i mobo which does not have the
offending SII controller - so no driver update. But I still had to go
through the whole doing-a-phone-activation thing as this was the only thing
that removed the problem.
