On my computer, the change date on "hosts" is quite old. It hasn't
changed in years.

Make a copy of the hosts file to a separate directory. Start
your computer again, and compare it to the original file, to
see if anything is actually changing.

My file has only one entry, because it is not being used by
any software, to filter or change the mapping of symbolic
to numeric IP addresses. You can do clever tricks with the
hosts file, such as send a person to the wrong web site,
by making entries in there. Which is something a virus or
trojan might want to do. Or, if you have software that
remaps IP addresses, so you see fewer adverts in web browsers,
it could be you're running some other software, that is
changing the hosts file on purpose.

So you also have to review whatever other software
you're running.

Technically the hosts file is used by all software, but they usually
don't find anything of interest in it (except "localhost").

Indeed. And programms like HijackThis monitor this.

I can't imagine why any legitimate software would be doing this.
