And do these popups recommend a particular product to remove this risk?
If so, that's a large clue to the particular adware that is the real
infection, and to how it's removed. Do not buy the product - just use the
name to identify the adware.

See below. Methods and directions are available.

Learn to recognise the standard Windows popup for dowloads and file launch.
Don't say yes to stuff you dont' want.

Look here for a page describing methods:
http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-SpySherrif-and-Spyaxe-Malware

This refers to a tool named SmitRem, which I have used to great success.
Read the instructions first, and be sure you know how to get into Safe Mode
because part of the fix is done there.

You must disable System Restore because the restore points will be infected.

If you do a Google search on Remove SpySherriff, you'll get lots of results.
You do not need to buy anything; part of the scam is to get your credit card
info.

At the end, make sure that you are using adequate Anti-virus protection
(such as AVG Free or Avast) and even the Windows Firewall; if you use a
high-speed connection of any type, invest in a router with firewall
functions. These are actually very easy to configure and add a lot to
security. And, they aren't expensive; I regularly see them in the CDN$50
range.

This is the wrong group.
Suggest you go to microsoft.public.security.virus and ask the same question.
