Virus sending itself to others

Chris Hansen

My boss doesn't want to get virus software.

We had a virus and purchased one disk to remove it from
all of our computers.

I thought it was gone, but am suspecting it of sending itself from
my computer still.

Can anyone recommend a some freeware/shareware that can
monitor if/when my computer sends out an e-mail. The virus
that we had used its own server to send out e-mail to folks
on my address list, even if my e-mail software was not open.

I think it is still there and I think it is still sending itself via e-mail
to folks on my address list and I want to detect it and show the
evidence to my boss to inspire him to invest more in protection.

Thanks in advance

Frankly, ALL of today's computers must have both an antivirus program and
a firewall. Failure to do so means that their computers WILL be infected
and then infect hundreds or more of other people's computers simply
because the original computer was not protected. And by potentially
infecting innocent people's computers, those innocent people could lose
their credit cards, their personal data and much more, perhaps their
entire computer, depending on how malicious the virus is.

Tell your boss he cannot hide his head in the sand and hope the problem
will go away by ignoring. There are good FREE programs out there. Check
out AVG at www.grisoft.com (there are others too). Go to www.zonelabs.com
and get Zona Alarm. Total cost = nada. Start protecting yourself and
others.

There are a couple of free on-demand type av scanners you could use to
scan your hard drive(s). One is Trend's Sysclean and the other is
SuperLite (based on KAV). See my web site for methods of downloading
them, etc.

Can someone fire your boss? ;-)

While networked? That is like the ol' shell game.

Why do you suspect this? Bounces purportedly of e-mails
coming from your account? Many worms pretend to come
from places they do not.

Since your boss is against having AV software, tell him
to investigate it himself. :blush:PPP

Many of them do this these days. Why request a free sniffer when
there are free AV programs which will do more to help you with
this situation? They will detect, identify, and usually remove the
problem for you.

There are also "online scanners" available for use for free, although
some admins may not want to use them.

If your machines aren't using NTFS, you could get F-Prot for
DOS and use it to identify the possible malware. F-Prot for DOS
doesn't require "installation", it works as a stand alone "on demand"
scanner. There are other free AV programs, but I think your boss
would have less compunctions about one that didn't "install" itself
and run underfoot "on access" scans.
