Virus Scanning during downloads

Anyone know how av scanning is done during downloads? I use AVG now, I think
the "resident shield" may cover this. I also use DAP Download Accelerator
Plus, and have added the AVG dos scan with parameters to this. It is not
however, compatible with WinZip. Also, I have found nothing in Mozilla
Download Manager where one can add av scans to the download. Nothing in
Opera transfer seems to allow this shell extension scanning.

Depending on how robust the resident(on access)scanning engine may be,
downloaded files may be scanned while the packets are being downloaded
to your HD. Some AV products actually have a separate component that
performs a monitoring of received packets. Other products won't
recognize whether or not the accumulated packets contain malicious code
until you try to access them (for example, execute an installation
program). IMO, manually scanning downloaded files from a reputable
source prior to trying to work with them is a much safer method than
relying on on access scanning to detect malicious code. And it's a very
bad idea to work with any files obtained from sources that can't be
vetted, regardless of whether or not they've been scanned.

Anyone care to tell me what "vetted" means here? TIA.

I mean if you can't "verify" the integrity of the source, then it's a
bad idea to be accepting software from that source.

As a file is written or read from a hard didk, the "On Access" scanner should scan the file.
If you are using a Inteernet Browser, it is scanned as it is written to the browser cache.
If you have "scan archive files" enabled, it should be able to scan within such files as
ZIP, RAR, CAB, etc. files.

Thank you. I understood the meaning, but wondered about the word
itself. Looks like it is in a fact an accepted verb that derives from
"to subject to veterinary evaluation".

It's one of those words whose "common usage" has evolved over the years.
In fact, I try to use it as infrequently as I can because it appears to
be overused these days.

Thanks guys, but hasn't anyone tried what I spoke of, putting external
scanning into an applications? Must not be much of an issue, but anyone that
has been bitten by a bad bug wouldn't think so. Sooner caught the better.

If the anti virus application is configured correctly, it is NOT needed.

Does anyone know if SAV9 scans RARs?

SARC.com is not much use.
