Virus Scan Will Not Complete

I reinstalled XP because Norton AntiVirus and other Norton scans would not
work. I got service pack 2 installed by downloading it to the hard drive and
installing from safe mode. Now the other scans complete, but AntiVirus stops
at the Windows drivers.cab file and freezes the whole system, without an
error message. Is the drivers.cab file corrupt? How do I fix this file so
that I can get a full virus scan?

Dump the contents of the IE Temporary Internet Folder cache (TIF)

start --> settings --> control panel --> internet options --> delete files

Open a Command Prompt.

In the Command Prompt type the following...

CHKDSK C: /F

If it replies..
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?
(Y/N)"

Choose - Y

type; EXIT

Reboot the PC.

A full Check Disk will want to be performed, allow it.

Thanks, your advice worked perfectly. I had messed with the problem for hours
and had gotten nowhere. I had run Norton Disk scans but to no avail, It seems
that checkdisk works better than the Norton variety.

Thanks for your reply. I got the other guy's before yours and followed his
advice before I got to yours. His advise worked. To answer your question it
was Norton AntiVirus 2005.

Thanks for your interest. I have often said that if I, who have spent many
hours a day for many years working on them, have the problems that I
sometimes have with computers, imagine the anguish that they must cause to
the casual user. Without experts who are willing to help all of us would be
lost.
