Which computervirusses damage the kernel32 and could corrupt the cmos ?

For as far as i know when there is no password programmed into the cmos and
it still wants a password suddenly , maybe it isn't a computer virus but the
cmos-battery that is almost empty. Replacing the battery didn't help with my
costumer, the data on the harddisk was damaged (file0000.chk,file0001.chk
etc..) but after resetting the cmos we could access the cmos normally.

It allso was possible to enter MS-DOS, but the setup failed from harddisk.
We needed the original win98 CD-Rom but his supplier didn't gave it to my
costumer. He even didn't had a boot-disk... there was nothing i could do
there.

Are there computervirusses which activate after a certain time period and if
so, which computervirusses could be responsible ?

Hmm, sounds like a perfectly legal installation of windows to me :)

A great many no doubt. Wasn't melissa a delayed-activation virus?

For future referenc, go into the Registry and get the Product Key number and
write it down. Then you can use anybody's Win98CD to reinstall it, as long
as it is basically the same:ie. SE, Dell, etc.
Open regedit.exe to this key and look in the right pane for the entry
ProductKey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

If the system is not working, start the computer with a floppy startup
disk.

At the A: prompt, type: C:\Windows\Command\Find /N "ProductKey"
C:\Windows\System.dat
(Note: ProductKey must be typed in upper and lower case letters as shown
and there is a space after: "Find" after: "/N" and after:
"ProductKey"
