Virus/Mozilla Firefox clash....

I made the age old mistake of going for a bit of 'one handed surfing' last
night, and as usual with porn sites.....I got a few viri on my system. My
virus prog seemingly got them all and deleted them, but ever since,
Firefox....which is my default browser, simply won't launch - leaving me
with using the dreaded IE which I've not used for years, and I dislike
having to do so intensely. Even if I right click for Firefox internet
options from the start menu, that too won't launch. I'm buggered if I know
what has caused this (apart from laying the blame on my libido that is;),
but having run a full system/virus scan, Adaware *and* Spybot (all up to
date), It is still not working.

I'm very much a layman in PC terms, so I thought that maybe trying to
reinstall Firefox may help me more than trying to actually find/fix it. Any
advice would be greatly appreciated.

A reinstall of Firefox would not be a bad place to start. In fact, that
would be what I would do.

Secondly, I would go to the Mozilla Addons Website
[https://addons.mozilla.com]and download a few security extensions such
as NoScript and AdBlock. Don't let the AdBlock name fool you, you can
use it to block anything.

You did not get 'viri' or 'virii' as there is no such terminology.
The plural for virus is viruses.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

As you so gracefully put me right on the plural of the word virus, may I be
so bold as to offer you a link to the definition of the word Layman? [Re:
"I'm very much a layman in PC terms"] From my original post. ;)
http://www.answers.com/topic/layman

Thanks for the advice, but I'm afraid it was all double Dutch to me, mate. I
reinstalled Firefox on the advice of 'Mayday' (thanks, 'Mayday'), and it has
been fine ever since. Thanks all the same though. :)

hassle than tearing my hair out trying to find out what was doing
it.....Reinstall, end of. Cheers! :)

Thanks I don't laymen, I prefer laying woman :-)

{ Just kidding }'

Seriously though, I just offered you a utility tho scan you computer for viruses. The
ustility is a front-end to four different anti virus vendor scanners where none have to
pre-exist on your PC.

I figured you were a novice and thus used the wrong plural terminology. It is NOT uncommon
on the Internet for the the faux terms of 'viri and/or 'virii' to be used. Thus I was
providing you with a bit of education. something I always do when it comes to computer
infectors simply becuase the well informed tend to get the least infected.
