virus in System Volume Information Folder

Mark

My antivirus program keeps informing me that I have a
virus (dialer?) in the System Volume Information Folder
and advises me to run a scan to remove it. I run the
scan and it finds nothing. When I try to open the folder
(I "unhid" it according to Microsoft's Knowledge Base
Article 309531 - My computer, tools, folder options,
view, unchecked "hide system folders", etc) but still it
won't open. If the antivirus program detects it, but
can't remove it, and I can't open the folder to remove it
myself, what can I try?

You can't remove individual files from the Restore Point. Go to Control Panel, System, System Restore. Turn System Restore off, reboot and turn it back on.

Greetings --

To clear viruses from the "System Volume Information," simply turn
off the System Restore feature (Start > All Programs > Accessories >
System Tools > System Restore, System Restore Settings), reboot, then
re-enable System Restore, and reboot one last time. This will delete
all of your Restore Points, including the corrupted one(s), and allow
you start with a clean slate.

However, if you have Restore Points that you'd really rather not
lose, and know which one is corrupted, very carefully try this:
