thank you.

Hi Glenn,

Why do suspect this is a virus?
Does the system get past the POST?
Does WinXP begin to load, then it restarts?

Glenn,

Do you have any utility disk like SystemWorks 2002? SystemWorks comes on a
bootable CD and you can use it to boot into a type of DOS and begin
repairing your mom's laptop.

If not, you can create a bootable disk with an anti virus app and other
useful utilities ala CHKDSK and Defrag. Just make sure your mom's laptop is
set to boot first from either the floppy drive or the CD ROM drive; else
you'll be stuck in a loop.

You may want to ask your mom, some questions like what was she doing before
this happened. This can go a long way in troubleshooting the system.
